I went for a day out hiking/backpacking on the Sandstone trail . Started at Barns bridge gates ,near Delamere forest .
Going north through the woods on tracks and trails following the yellow boot waymarker. Met lots of mountain bikers
Headed west towards Manley common its a small hamlet and a good landmark,
here the trail goes onto some lanes with light traffic then going past Manley knoll and Simmonds hill, re-joined the trail and uphill past disused quarry over fields and down to Ridgeway.
Then up a steep muddy path upto Woodhouse hill.
I checked out the old fort and circular walks , this is where the walk starts to get very hilly,
and steep in parts eventually got to Overton hill onto the cliff edges with a grand vista of the estuary of the Manchester Ship canal and the river weaver meet.
and looking West to Helsby Hill could make out North Wales .
So as I'd done 6 miles found a nice bench to rest and have late lunch 3pm.
Then onwards along the cliff ridges through woods. Around Beacon hill overlooking Frodsham .
This Is where the trail goes down deep gullys and up very steep switchback steps .
As It was getting late I decided to go back the Easier route of Delamere way .
So along the track and around the Golf course crossing fields . A lot of this trail goes on lanes . This was helpful as It was going dusk . As It was I was heading South and could see the Crescent moon with the Southern star brightly in the clear sky .
And most of the way was nice and downhill . Went past the New pale. As It was dark now I put on my Yellow Vis and had to use my torch eventually .
I got to Manley Common where the houses were lit ,and Street lamps on .
The I got to the Turning point to go East Into Delamere Forest along a dirt track lane . I was back on the well marked Sandstone main Tracks/trails .
As It had gone 5 pm , It was pitch black and I had a guesstimated 2 miles to go.
Well It was very Eerie and quite unnerving walking in the woods and not able to see without my torch , I was hoping I would not take the wrong track in the dark .
But I found all the well marked guide posts very helpful. Eventually I came out of the forest onto the Ashton heyes road and after 1k found my car.
I checked the miles I'd hiked and was very happy to have covered over 12 miles . So I had a brilliant day out and had a good test of my hiking gear plus my new metal knee stood up to all . Thats all folks ZIZAG
