Heading over to Scotland at the end of May. Plan is to get the train to Rannoch, walk up to Corrour old lodge and camp. Then on to Meanach and camp and then on to Glen Nevis campsite. The fourth day will be a train back from Fort William.
I will be flying from Dublin so won't be taking a stove with me. I have been getting stuff ordered and sent to my sister. Bought a wee soto stove that will stay at hers for future use. The real turmat ration packs arrived as well as cheaper to send to her than myself and gas as well.
Flights booked, Glen Nevis campsite booked and paid so just the train to book. Unfortunately I no longer have a Scottish Bank account so can't get an over 50s card so full whack on the train and the tram to gateway costs more than the train to my sisters.
I had been hoping to have a Dan Durston xmid 2 tent for this trip but they sold out in about a minute. I will be taking my trusty Vango Helium instead. I intend to carry the bare MI imum hence the campsite booked at the end for a wash
Now it is getting back up to fitness again. I currently have a cracked rib and frozen shoulder. I will have to make sure there is a convenient rock to help me get the rucksack on
I'll probably fit in an overnighter at Mayday as well but just now it is all prep for Scotland.

The Soto range are very well engineered. I'm an alcohol burner. Been using a Speedster Backpacking Products system for the small GSI Hallulite pot on the hill & one for the Alpkit Myti on the bike (because the pot fits in the Alpkit Fuelcell on the bike). I primarily use food from the supermarkets for my trips but have been using Mountain Fuel porridge drinks for breakfast. They've been working well. Small portions but get me through to lunch - something I struggle to do with most breakfast rations on the hill. I've often saved my 'pudding' from the night before as a breakfast supplement!
I've not backpacked since October 2018 & was doing less & less before then due to wearing out the cartilage in my ankle. I had a replacement ankle in March last year. I've my first weekend backpack planned for this weekend in the Lakes. Planned route is about 18 miles over 2 days but if I find it's too much I'll just pitch up early. Tent wise I'm undecided - my bombproof UK made Trekkertent Edge or my new Trekkertent 'Phreeranger' in cuben fibre. As it doesn't rely on trekking poles to pitch I got it for bikepacking primarily.
Sounds good sb. I like the trekker tent reiteration of the old phoenix tents. I still quite fancy a drift and the stealth reminds me of my old Saunders. I was looking at them only last week.
I was toying with getting a clean trangia burner and taking over the Trangia mini or the crusader system but factoring in the cost of a burner and bioethanol and the soto and gas was the same. It is a soto amicus without the piezo. It will fit on with my optimus clip on windshield and the primus lite tech. I'm a sucker for new stoves...
That is the advantage of wild camping, find a pitch that is good and pitch up early if needs be. Enjoy the walk.

Sounds like a great trip, hope your shoulder improves for it. Have only seen the Dan Durstan tent on YouTube but does look impressive. My mate has been trying to get a scarp 2 tent for a while with no joy either. Hoping to take family to Scotland at Easter - ferry from Belfast costing just under £400!!
Aye the ferry is expensive. Larne is a tad cheaper.

Didn't manage to get the Durston tent. It was sold out in seconds both days. I will be taking the Vango helium 1 instead.
Shoulder is getting better but still haven't been given an appointment for a consultant. I got covid this week so hopefully that won't impinge on fitness.
Here is the route on garmin basecamp.
I have been spending time fettling and looking at weight reductions. I will be taking the nikon but with the 50mm equivalent lens. It is a fixed prime but it fits in my waist belt pocket with that lens. Food is all bought. I'm trying real turmat this time and I have ditched the electric mini pump for my mat and taking the original exped pump. Half the weight.
So less than 2 months to go...

Small world. How was it?
I'm getting a late train so will be at Rannoch at about 15:00. This means a shorter first day up to Corrour old lodge.
I've done variants of it but not the complete one. I also want to do Dalwhinnie to Fort William and Rannoch to Spean bridge. I have an idea also for Dalwhinnie to Inverie but Oh would like to do part of the Hebridean way next year.

So one week to go.
All the gear fettled and some refinements.
Bought a titanium mug. I'm only boiling water so it will do fine. A lot lighter than the primus pot but the gas canister won't fit in it. The sea to summit x mug does though.
Gas seems a bit difficult/expensive to get at the moment but got it. I experimented with power banks as well and the 20000mah one will do for the whole journey. I replaced the batteries in the petzl with their rechargeable battery but will buy batteries once there for the garmin. Only need 2 spare as the ones in it should last the trip.
No knife. I have scissors in the first aid kit and a gi tin opener if needed for, ahem, bottles on the last evening.
I bought a speedster burner but Irish customs sent it back. I asked Gary to send it to my sister so I ordered a pot stand as well. Big thumbs up to Gary at speedster for his help. Great service and thanks spiritburner (R) as well for help and advice.
I am sorely tempted to use it next week but I want to bring it home on the plane so best not have it used. I will go out June Bank hol the following week and use it.
Keeping a keen eye on the weather. I expect it will be wet. Suits me. I don't do well in the heat.
I will also be keeping a keen eye for ticks. They seem to be getting worse every year. If the midges are out I have Smidge and my head net.
I bought the train tickets on the Scotrail app. As I live abroad I can't avail of their over 50s discounts and I also notice they cut it fine for connections. I reckon I will get an earlier train to Edinburgh so I can get to Glasgow earlier. The ticket allows it and they had me down for only 20 minutes between arriving at Queen St and getting the West Highland. Bit too close for me.
So, I have Friday off for packing and last minute checks. Flight on Saturday and train Monday morning. It will be good to be back.

Oh. I also intend trying out a Source bottle hose for my nalgene. I've used their bladders in the past but have never been happy with a bladder in my pack. This fits my nalgene wide mouth. My water filter also screws onto the nalgene. My shoulder restricts getting the bottle out of the side pocket. I do have a pack strap holder but a kilo of water on the strap isn't ideal.
Yeah, I know most of the water is safe to drink but the filter takes the peat tannins out and my stomach isn't as cast iron as it used to be. That leads in to the imodium melts I will be taking as well

Sounds like a great trip. Ticks are out (judging by the tick magnet dog), but no bad midges yet (in Ayrshire at least). Weather is all over the place! Baking hot, then a monsoon. Generally speaking though, it’s not been so wet that the route should be a problem.
