In a few weeks me and the lad are going wild camping, been promising for ages after we watched many YouTube videos. Question is can anyone recommend a decent place for first timers, not too remote but to give the lad the experience. We’re based near Bradford West Yorkshire. Thanks

wild camping is not legal in all parts of england and wales, other than a couple of small areas in devon

why not just book your selves into a camp site?

I'm not sure that wild camping as such is actually permitted in England, although I think it may be in parts of Scotland. It may be that you would need to contact a farmer who would allow to you to pitch for a short time in a remote corner of a field.

Don't take my word for it though as I'm only going by what I have read on here. I've never actually tried it.

Peak District above 400ft (or the wall line) from memory is permitted and Scotland. But from reading as long as you’re out of the way and practice leave no trace it is tolerated. Or that’s my understanding...

With all the fires around at the moment wild camping is unlikely to be tolerated for a while no doubt some of the fires will be blamed on irresponsible wild camping.
Why not introduce your lad to camping by finding a small very basic and cheap site this summer and take it forward from there.

You’ve posted in the Backpacking forum. Does that mean both of you are walking or cycling (or even canoeing!) in to where you’re hoping to pitch the tent? I’m only asking because “wild camping” in Scotland strictly speaking excludes using a vehicle. Either way, the key word is still “responsible” and that covers open fires (as others have said), toileting, cutting wood etc. (More about it in the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.)
Camping is a great way to make memories though, I hope you have a good trip somewhere.

Hello, if you're still looking for somewhere I'd suggest Gunnerside Gill in North Yorkshire assuming you're ok with a bit of a walk in.

Strictly speaking only "open access" land can be wild camped on in England. In reality as long as you're a decent height up, out of the way and you pitch late and leave early, leaving no trace, then you'll be fine.

I suggest joining the Paul Messner community on Facebook if you need further help/advice, there are some helpful and experienced people on there. YouTube is worth a search for ideas.
