Thinking of taking up backpacking after many years absence ( some guys have golf so I've decided I need a hobby of my own without wife and kids).

Everything is lot lighter since I lugged heavy canvas packs over the Lake District.

Anyone recommend a good lightweight 1-2 person tent.   Looking at the Vango range and they have some good ones but I guess reflects quality.

I've got a coleman epsilon 3 which I bought for backpacking / cycle camping on my own. It's labelled a 3 man tent (for bean poles maybe!) but it's light enough to put in a pannier or a rucksack too at 3kg. I went for the '3 man' epsilon as I wanted to go camping with my 2 little girls aswell some day, but if you only to go on your own, there is the epsilon 2 or the cobras etc in the coleman range which are well under £75 and have a good rep in the budget section of lightweight(ish) backpacking tents.

I've got a few tents for different uses.  I often use a Eurohike 210TS when hiking on my own.  Although it's a cheap tent, it is actually very good quality and easy to carry.  I've used mine in winter and it's stood up to the weather, no problem.

I have a Hilleberg Akto for solo use - 1.5K and a Macpac Minaret for a duo - 2.4 K. Both are excellent tents and are pretty much bomb proof. They are what you might term "reassuringly expensive" though. However I find that it is a pleasure using really good kit that you can rely upon which to me adds to the experience.

Many thanks for help everyone.  Got a few more ideas now plus a couple of websites I hadn't see before.  Did a search on Coleman Epsilon and found this place which has loads of tents http://hq.outdoorgear.co.uk - some are quite reasonable and would do for the amount of times I am going to get out.  Don't intend to camp up mountains but on small sites so don't need anything too extreme.  This one looks good at £64.99 don't you think (only 980 grams with an HH of 3000) ?

Not sure if it applies to modern tents but when we had an old single skin canvas tent, as kids, you couldn't touch the sides as water would come in there.
