Hi all,
I was up early on our rest day at the Foreshore Caravan Park Streaky Bay.
The early morning sun lighting up the Casurina beside our tent.
A lovely mural in town depicting children at the beach in times gone by.
Eyre’s waterhole is located just 5 ks from town, an historical spot that I had wanted to visit for some time.
Pity about the typo on the sign!
We now went on the Cape Bauer Loop Drive a short distance north east of Sreaky Bay. We came across this Blue Tongue sitting right in the middle of the track.
He/she got a bit peeved when I picked it up and put it safely out of dangers way!! oh well at least it was now safe from being squished by some knuckle head looking for a bit of fun!!
I don’t remember ever seeing one poke their tongue out that far before!
Cape Bauer was named by Mathew Flinders whilst circumnavigating Australia in 1802, he named it after his onboard natural history artist, Austrian Ferdinand Bauer.
We saw a weird plant on our back to our car from the beach, it’s flowers closely resembled foam fishing net bouys that you sometimes see washed up on our ocean beaches!!!!
Back for lunch, just loved how we were able to keep this social distancing stuff happening. The reason we were so good at it was that we had been perfecting it for years with our isolated camping practices.!!
In the afternoon we went on another Loop Drive, this time called, Westall Way it was located south of town, our first stop was at a place called the Granites.
It had a number of lovely rock pools and lichen covered rocks nearby.
We took numerous tracks exploring the rugged coastline around the Point Westall region.
When Col explores an area there is not much we don’t see, Jen was impressed when we came out on this isolated beach.
One track took us to the Yanerbie Sandhills which were massive.
We then drove further down the coast, here we are at Surfers Beach near Sceale Bay, looking north then south and then parked on the southern end of the beach.
We drove down the Calca Peninsular, here are the cliffs at Point Labatt and a viewing platform for the local Sea-lion Colony.
The Point Labatt Conservation Park is home to the only permanent colony of Australian Sea-lions on the mainland, due to it being one of the few places where they are protected from land predators making it an ideal spot for them to breed and raise new pups.
After a day of rest!! we settled back in to watch the end of another day at Streaky Bay, only a little bit of colour in the sky but still nice to see.
Time to move on, we headed north, stopping at Haslam, a small community on the shores of Streaky bay. Here there were many caravaners who had set up on the beach, it was obvious that many had set up permanently and were probably planning on seeing out the pandemic here!
An interesting house sign out the front of one of the nearby holiday homes.
Just before we arrived at Smoky Bay we took a road/track down to Point Brown. It was here that a Whaling Station had started in 1850, it operated for ten years and then closed after they had slaughtered wiped out all visiting whales.
Point Brown and the track on the far side of it that took us there.
A bit to the east of there is Point Collinson, we now went in search of a popular rock pool but all sign posts to it had had the signs removed (vandilised). Big Col wasn’t daunted so with the beast in 4 wheel drive we negotiated some fun tracks in search of what the locals wanted to be kept secret.
We stumbled on this lovely Cove.
A bit further on we parked the beast and set off on foot, below some boulders and out of site from any vantage point we came across the pool that brochures talk about. Point Brown Pool, which isn’t at the point of that name!
Nice, but it was just a pool but the effort we put into finding it gave us quite a buzz when we found it!!
We stayed that night at the Shelly Beach Caravan Park Ceduna, for the next day we were to start our drive across the Nullarbor. Again we nailed the social isolating bit plus we had a view and our own private beach shelter!
Now I’m not a spiritual person as such, but we had a sign from above that we had found a nice spot. An X marked the spot where we were.
I’ve featured the Penong Windmill Museum previously (as I have a couple of other places on this trip) but it is a unique destination so if we are ever allowed out again, put it on the list.
The largest Windmill in Australia (which has a 10.6 metre diameter) and a very clever portable/movable one.
Time to push on, our next stop would be the Nullarbor Roadhouse (something for all of you to look forward to) that and more will be featured in the next trip report.
