Hi all,
My last report ended with us at Hammond in the southern Flinders Ranges region, we now headed for Carrieton founded in 1877. There are still many historic buildings from the later part of the 1800s still standing there today.
St Raphael’s Catholic Church (1889) and a solitary grave located just in front of the main building.
This was the towns general store built in 1879, it used to have a verandah but that didn’t stand the test of time.
Boy did we enjoy seeing this, the local swimming pool. Not because it was hot, which it wasn’t (closed due to the Virus anyway), but for the magnificent murals painted on it. I particularly liked the way the artist had painted shadows of his subjects, they appeared to take on a three demential look to them.
They even had a Rat up a drainpipe, how good's that!!
Plus a pretty laid back Koala.
Another building I liked the look of was the towns Uniting Church, built in the mid 1880s.
We now drove further east with the area becoming more parched. The drought still had a hold on the land out there even though they had had some recent rain.
Each creek crossing was lined with River Red Gums, they were pretty pleased I reckon that they had survived another long drought!
Our next stop was Johnburgh, another place where social distancing wouldn’t be a problem during the current crisis, or at any other time either!!!!
Letter boxes are pretty basic out there, but no mail service and basically no one living there is possibly the reason!!
The ruins of the Johnburgh Hotel, built in 1882.
Pottering around inside these old ruins you had to be on the ball and very careful.
Even though this building was constructed nearly 140 years ago, they still made some effort to enhance it’s appearance buy doing some ornate brick work around the front windows.
Our next destination was Orroroo, along the way we spotted this tree which had germinated right in the middle of a creek, the seed deposited there by a flood or rain event many years previous. It would have survived for many years being in a spot where any rain would have accumulated but alas, even that location would not have helped it in the long droughts that have occurred over time, especially in an area that has low rainfall in the best of seasons.
Every time I pass through Ororoo I always stop at this corrugated sculpture. A still photo doesn’t capture the movement created by the slightest of breezes which moves the horses heads. A bit further on the artist had also created a few contented Roos hanging about a water feature in the centre of the towns main street.
We briefly stopped at Burra a town I have passed through many many times, just a few pics this time of a couple of churches we passed.
This “fairly impressive” one is the St Mary’s Anglican Church, constructed in 1879
Their Church Hall built on the same grounds as the above.
The date of it’s construction was emblazoned on this stone so all learned people in generations to come would immediately know the date!!!!!!!
A short distance down the road was the St Joseph’s Catholic Church (1874)
We had a late lunch beside the Burra Creek, a lovely spot being quite a contrast to what we had seen and experienced over the previous days.
Just one more report to go, still plenty to show you, plus some things that you will most likely have never seen before, till then.
Regards,
Col and Jen.
------------- The worst day above ground, is a whole lot better than the best one under it. Live life to the fullest while you can.
