I find it rather inappropriate that someone should start a thread confessing that there dog savaged a sheep then turn it into a happy holiday thread with all there photos.

The holiday had good and bad moments, it should not be that difficult to comprehend!

You are of course entitled to your opinions.

One does not have to read/participate in a thread if it is not to one's taste/sensitivity/whatever.

Hat's off to DK, I say.
Yes, it was unfortunate. Gruesome, some might say. Would have been so much easier to report on a great holiday, and completely whitewash over the attack, and say nothing.
I for one applaud her openness and honesty, not to mention her determination to do all in her power to ensure it doesn't happen again.
Had she posted a happy clappy version, then someone had come on and said "Hey, DK. We were there at the same time. You should have come and said hello... Oh, and by the way, we witnessed your dog maul that poor unfortunate lamb!!" how would she have felt then?
I'm not advocating allowing dogs to run willy-nilly in inappropriate places. I'm not a dog owner, nor particularly a dog lover. In fact, due to my allegiance to my football team, you could say I am more attracted to our ovine friends!!
Must admit, my first reaction was "Well, keep the bloody thing on a lead then"! But then I don't know the rules... and it seems she was perfectly entitled to allow her dog to roam free? Either way, it happened, and DK showed remorse and regret in her opening posts. Maybe she was even thinking it may help other dog owners, just to remind them of what could happen, if they let their guard down. She certainly comes across as the caring and helpful sort.
Life isn't all buttercups and roses, and it does no harm, imo, to bring the less attractive side of life to the fore, now and again... And no harm to debate it, either.

One other thing that has (literally) just sprung to my mind... Borda was put on this earth to offer companionship and affection to someone who was willing to offer love and life in return. No doubt this poor lamb was put there simply to go on the dinner plates of folk less sensitive and caring?
Let's not lose sight of the fact this was an accident... ALL accident's are avoidable, by their very nature, but they happen all around us, every second of the day. That's life... and death!

Unfortunate, upsetting, and controversial... but well done, DK, for being open and honest about it, I say.

Yep the wee lamb has much worse than a bite on the nose to look forward to later in life....If it has not already done so!!!!......

"Unfortunate Accident" is what sprang to mind when I first read DK's report....Both parties in the wrong place at the wrong time......Situation was addressed at the time....And steps are being taken to minimize further incidents of the same nature....End of story for me anyway...

All dog owners have a responsibility both to the animal they share their lives with and the public in general and should know or at least be familiar with the rules and regs governing said responsibility....."I never knew that!!" probably being inadmissible as an excuse if things ever came to court.....

Like us every dog has a different personality and outlook on life....Depending on the dog itself and the traits it shows...Some of us need to be a bit stricter and careful in our handling of the dog in its dealings with other animals and humans....Some of us know our dogs and can be more lenient in our handling....With an eye open for...And an understanding that those "Accidents" can and possibly will happen.....So we adhere as much as possible to the rules for dog ownership imposed on us by public consent as much as possible....If we want to be known as "Responsible Dog owners....

I'll stop there.....Looking above I find I have gone on a bit....Rambled a bit....and somewhere in it all said what I meant to say in a longer fashion than I intended when I started.......

Jelboy.

Not to labour a point or with intention of upsetting anyone but if nothing else this discussion has opened some dog owners eyes as to what their dog is capable of.

You should always research the characteristics of any dog you are thinking of getting.
For example the Border Terrier is by nature a ratter and an excellent one at that ( ask farmers ).
They will go for birds. squirrels and cats and good at keeping foxes away, they are quite fearless.

I always have my BT on a lead as I can't see around corners as to what might be there. I do let her off the lead when I take her to a very long beach near where I live on a regular basis, 3-4 times per week. No livestock near for miles..

I do this because if she sees something and decides to run, no matter what I say, shout or scream, it will not make her stop or come back. Eventually she would return but in her own time..
I found this out very early on.
She is not an unruly dog or poorly trained..she is a Border Terrier and it is in her nature and I already new that before I got her.

I have friends and met lots of owners who also have BT's and the story is pretty much the same.

I hope DK does not see this as further criticism but more of an understanding of the breed, I am not an expert just an owner.

country side rules about dogs running free are not about soppy eyed compassion for animals they are about farmers protecting their property :)

as for the OPs pooch being put on this earth to give love and attention.. hmmm.. maybe its silly thoughts like this that let "townies" own sheep mauling animals and be daft enough to let them off the leash when in the country side..

how is the dog training gonna help.. let the animal of the leash and see if it savages another sheep..

a dog is a wild animal maybe trained but it is still what it is.. people that are not aware of this should not be owning dogs..

Bear in mind that it is the tax paid by townies that pays the subsidies that makes most sheep farming profitable.

We live near a long beach and we still keep our border terrier on a lead. She will chase a low flying seagull for miles.

Our back garden appears to be the flightpath for low flying seagulls (we live on the coast) and she could usually see the shadow before the bird on sunny days.

Fortunately she has had a fear of low flying birds since she was a puppy.
Mind you she will give chase if one lands on the beach but gives up when they start to fly off.

I live in the countryside and I can assure you that country folk can be some of the worst offenders when it comes to controlling their dogs.

i dont have problems with an odd moment of thoughtlessness causing an accident.. i have major problems with the poor little fellow (the dog) it must have been a shock for him type attitude..

i also think you cant blame the dog for doing what dogs naturally do.. you can blame the owners for letting them do what dogs naturally do.. and worse still seemingly being unaware of what dogs naturally do.. :)

years ago we had a pet cat.. one day it was sunning itself on a car bonnet a minute or so later it was dead having been ripped to pieces by a couple of dogs..

a grey hound and a little terrier both owned by the same person.. the big dog reached up on the car bonnet the cat not being that bothered casually jumped off the other side.. the terrier which the cat did not know was there grabbed it.. the cat soon died a very painful death.. did the dogs owner apologize for the action of their dogs.. nope.. did it upset my kids.. very much so..

the estate did have dog problem at the time.. the cat incident was witnessed by a local councillor.. some good did come of it.. the female councillor saw a taste of dog reality and action about the dog problem was taken..

and yep i know cats kill birds (before someone informs me) but that is the whole point of what i am waffling on about.. :)
