Just back from six days travelling around Scotland with my daughter, camping where the fancy (and the weather forecast) took us and going to places which didn't have to be booked.
First was a night's wild camping in Glen Orchy with my brother and 11 year old niece. She's been wild camping with her dad since she was small and described this trip as 'luxury wild camping'.
Next day it was off to Glencoe to climb one of the peaks of Bidean nam Bian (1115m/3658ft). Niece and I got about halfway and that was enough for us while my daughter and brother reached the top.
Several hours later, to our relief, they reappeared. We were worried we'd be too late for a meal in the Clachaig.
Then it was off to the Red Squirrel campsite for my daughter and me. We've been many times before but never during the summer months.
I'd promised myself a swim in the river.
Then I found the rope swing!
Blackrock Cottage - a wellknown scene.
We headed north and stopped at Torridon. There's a camping field there which is free to use, as is the toilet and shower block just outside the entrance (review submitted). The midges were thick so we retreated to the nearby Inn for a meal. There was a wedding going on in the hotel next door and they all came out between showers to have photos taken. All we could see were flailing arms as they tried to ward off the midges. How they stayed still for a photo, I don't know, but the moment it was over they all started the midgie dance again. I'm afraid to say we got quite a bit of amusement out of watching their antics!
Next morning we packed up and hit the road again, heading to Durness on the north coast. I hadn't appreciated how much of Scotland there is in the far north - miles and miles of vast open land, ranges and ranges of mountains, countless lochs. Driving is slower as getting anywhere involves going over a mountain and round a loch, over a mountain and round a loch, often on single track roads where the sheep and oncoming camper vans dictate the speed. It's also necessary to stop every two minutes to take photos or watch an eagle overhead.
Eventually, journey's end. We arrived at Sango Sands campsite in Durness (review submitted). It is so worth the journey! The site looks down on a beautiful beach - in fact, the whole area is lovely. There's no need to book as there's plenty of space. There's even a campers' cooking shelter with large gas rings to use, free of charge.
The nearby Smoo Cave. We took a small boat trip which takes you further in.
We also went on a guided ranger walk along a nearby beach to see puffins, and learned a lot about the local wildflowers, birds and history at the same time.
A friendly black-headed gull we nicknamed Marvin who joined us regularly for breakfast - Starvin' Marvin!
A few more pictures of the beach.
A great few days away and so much more of the country still to discover.
