Just back from six days travelling around Scotland with my daughter, camping where the fancy (and the weather forecast) took us and going to places which didn't have to be booked.

First was a night's wild camping in Glen Orchy with my brother and 11 year old niece. She's been wild camping with her dad since she was small and described this trip as 'luxury wild camping'.

Next day it was off to Glencoe to climb one of the peaks of Bidean nam Bian (1115m/3658ft). Niece and I got about halfway and that was enough for us while my daughter and brother reached the top.

Several hours later, to our relief, they reappeared. We were worried we'd be too late for a meal in the Clachaig.

Then it was off to the Red Squirrel campsite for my daughter and me. We've been many times before but never during the summer months.

I'd promised myself a swim in the river.

Then I found the rope swing!

Blackrock Cottage - a wellknown scene.

We headed north and stopped at Torridon. There's a camping field there which is free to use, as is the toilet and shower block just outside the entrance (review submitted). The midges were thick so we retreated to the nearby Inn for a meal. There was a wedding going on in the hotel next door and they all came out between showers to have photos taken. All we could see were flailing arms as they tried to ward off the midges. How they stayed still for a photo, I don't know, but the moment it was over they all started the midgie dance again. I'm afraid to say we got quite a bit of amusement out of watching their antics!

Next morning we packed up and hit the road again, heading to Durness on the north coast. I hadn't appreciated how much of Scotland there is in the far north - miles and miles of vast open land, ranges and ranges of mountains, countless lochs. Driving is slower as getting anywhere involves going over a mountain and round a loch, over a mountain and round a loch, often on single track roads where the sheep and oncoming camper vans dictate the speed. It's also necessary to stop every two minutes to take photos or watch an eagle overhead.

Eventually, journey's end. We arrived at Sango Sands campsite in Durness (review submitted). It is so worth the journey! The site looks down on a beautiful beach - in fact, the whole area is lovely. There's no need to book as there's plenty of space. There's even a campers' cooking shelter with large gas rings to use, free of charge.

The nearby Smoo Cave. We took a small boat trip which takes you further in.

We also went on a guided ranger walk along a nearby beach to see puffins, and learned a lot about the local wildflowers, birds and history at the same time.

A friendly black-headed gull we nicknamed Marvin who joined us regularly for breakfast - Starvin' Marvin!

A few more pictures of the beach.

A great few days away and so much more of the country still to discover.

Waww armchair! Some cracking snaps there! You certainly covered the miles. I will be interested to hear all about your wild camp next time we meet up. I loved the photo of you having a dook in the River Coe and a wee swing on the ropey.

Do I feel a knitted 'starvin marvin' coming on?

Brilliant Armchair..Weather was kind to you by the looks of things.
That was an excellent wild camp spot in Glen Orchy right next to the river.I have wild camped in the area often in my younger days.

Glencoe, smoo cave and the beaches at Durness all great photos.
Sango Sands campsite is on our to do list

The wild camp was fun, Krazy. It was such a beautiful spot. I thought of using the bivvy bag instead of the tent but the midges and ticks put me off. We used a stove rather than a fire, took every trace of our rubbish (and other people's!) out with us and followed the guidelines for outdoor toileting. Apart from some flattened grass there shouldn't have been any sign of our visit.

I don't know about the knitted Marvin but I've found a pattern for a beautiful crocheted bird. I'm sure I need one for my tent.

Most excellent Sarah! I am trying to picture where abouts in Glen Orchy you were. I visited Smoo cave years ago but I've never been to Sango Sands - it looks as good as the beaches on harris!

We were near the north end of Glen Orchy, a mile or so down from that end. Although the road was at the top of the bank there weren't more than about six vehicles along it the whole time we were there.

Katie's tent is one that my brother designed and made. He let her borrow it for the trip. It's very lightweight (less than 1kg) and the flysheet and inner pack down to about the size of a drinking bottle. The inner is mesh, it's got two side entrances and a porch each side. It pitches using two trekking poles, the idea being that it is a light and wind-resistant design for backpacking. (No need to carry tent poles if you've got walking poles.) It certainly stood up to all the wind and rain we encountered.

The other grey tent (behind the two girls on the wild camping photo) is another of his designs. He's got a few different designs on the go and there's quite a bit of interest in them. The yellow thing isn't one of his. He was trying it out as he's hoping to make his own version which doesn't have the condensation problems of the yellow one. My niece slept in it and there was a lot of condensation in the morning.

Another vote for those photo's....Superb.

Even better was that the two girls loved the outdoor life...My daughter (now 26) would not venture anywhere without straighteners and other assorted dross. If it's not got 5 stars and all inclusive she doesn't want to know....Ha ha..

Still 'we' know what shes missing.

What a lovely time you had Armchair, fabulous photos. The wild camping spot looks a bit special.

I visited Sango Sands when I hired the campervan and have been desparate to return, It's a real lunar landscape on the road there, quite different to the terrain further south .
