Hi all,
We did this trip in early June
Our states first weekend since the Covid 19 outbreak where remote camping was allowed, had us heading off again, conveniently it coincided with the Queens Birthday long weekend.
We choose a spot away from the crowds, it was winter and it usually isn’t too busy at this time of year, but this weekend every one and their dog who could get away, were certainly going to take advantage of their first taste of freedom in a long time.
We didn’t arrive till after dark, once we had set the van up the next thing was to get the fire blazing as the forecast that night was for zero!!!
A full moon rose over the tranquil waters of the Waranga Basin.
Believe it or not but I was up early Saturday morning to light the fire and to watch the dawning of another new day out in the sticks, so to speak, our first for quite some time. At minus 1 I had to knock the ice off the kindling first but once the fire was going it was worth it.
Eventually the girls showed themselves and were pleased with our location and the roaring fire!
One of the first things we wanted to see in the area, was the recently completed artwork on the Colbinabbin Silos.
It was a little difficult to capture them at their best due to the low winter sun and the artwork being on the southern side of the Silos, still they were very very impressive. Painted by Benalla Street artist Tim Bowtell, it took over 50 days of work to create what is one of if not the most impressive Silo art sites in the country.
Depicted are a local picnic from the early 1900s (called the Colbo picnic) residents and visitors would get dressed up in all their finery and have a wonderful time. Up to 2000 people would catch trains to the town to join in with the festivities. Next to that the train station is shown, sadly it no longer in exists.
The double concrete silo shows a steam engine that used to bring in passengers as well as grain carriages, playing an important role for farmers taking grain from the silos to distant markets.
The rural fire service plays an important rural for the town and surrounding community (as they do in most rural towns across the country) here it shows a 1947 CFA Austin firetruck beside the local water channel, beyond that on the bridge over the channel, kids in sporting gear are on their way to the local footy ground.
Finally the Colbinabbin Tractor Pull has been featured, it was a favourite past time or get together for locals who loved pitting their machines strength against other locals and those from afar. Starting in the 1980s on one occasion they expected around 3000 people but over 22,000 turned up!! The sausage sizzle sold out real quick that day!!!
On the way back to our camp we stopped at this lovely old house, so much character.
That afternoon we popped into Murchison, rumour had it that local inbreeding of some cows had created breeds not seen anywhere else in the world, how could I not show the girls that.
The first one we came across was called Tigermoomoo!!
Then the very popular “Bovineblowie”, this unique breed attracts the local blow flys, making it more pleasant for all others who are nearby, really annoys the moo cows though!
We had heard about this one before arriving in town, Moomusic. Apparently the hides of certain animals have images or patterns that have been likened to musical instruments. If you squint a bit you can just make out the outline of them, sooooo good.
Another rare and unique cow we saw was this one, a relatively new breed I called it “Mooovinghouses”
Before leaving town we stopped at one of the more impressive buildings found there. Heritage listed Thornebridge was constructed by Henry Thorne in 1868, it is located right beside the main bridge that crosses the Goulburn River just before town.
From the Net; “Today she has been transformed into historic luxury accommodation with an unrivalled opulent restoration back to a bygone Victorian era, lavishly furnished with Victorian antiques and adorned with magnificent period lighting. The detail in the decoration of full wall stencilling , hand painted cornices and friezes, wood graining of all the timber and the marbling of columns and baths is just mind blowing”.
That magnificent tree just out the front of the building is a heritage listed London Plane tree, planted in 1913 it is the 4th largest of its type in the state.
Beside the building were a number of old trucks, adding character to the scene.

On the Sunday we drove to Tongala, the town has become quite famous for the many murals they have there. The first one we came to depicts the story of the very first person/family to take up land in the area, naming their run Tongala Station.

On our last evening, this sunset, and then I stoked up the fire for the girls.
We weren’t cold, the blazing fire and sixteen layers of clothes did the trick!!
