Many of you will know, we adopted a Romanian rescue pup earlier this year. Her name is Pinto and she arrived in May. We should have been camping twice earlier in the year but covid put payed to both of those trips. Anyway we managed to postpone our May trip to last week when we went off to our local site, Spring Valley, which is just a 20 minute drive away. You will remember our beautiful Bailey, I always used to share his camping adventures so I shall continue to do so with Pinto. I'm sure you will appreciate going from an 11 year old sedate labrador to a whirlwind of a puppy is quite a change!

Pinto took to camping really well, with the exception of being a little restless at night. However we were worried she would bark at every sound she heard, but she didn't! We had taken a crate for her but she wouldn't entertain it, so she slept in her basket between our beds. We had to zip her into the bedroom with us as our tent door has a velcro closing at the bottom which would not have kept her in! She actually got out once when DH was stood in the doorway and provided the campsite entertainment by running round in circles! She was happy outside the tent on her spike, in fact she made herself very comfy in the spare camping chair!

We were only away for 4 nights but i'm really pleased she settled so well. Pack up was awful as we had very heavy rain. We'd taken a lot of gear home with being so close and gone back to drop the tent, the heavens opened and the tent, us and Pinto all got soaked!

Anyway, here are some snaps!

Got herself settled while we were setting up...

What lovely pictures, and a lovely dog too. Keep 'em coming! We are still missing our dog Benji that we lost to illness in June. He loved coming away in our caravan, and used to get so excited when we got to a new site. He was 14 when he last came with us on holiday last September, but he still bounded around when he got out of the car on the site.
Here he is going on a boat trip off the North Norfolk coast.

Aww bless him, so sorry for your loss Colin, what a life he had. Even with Pinto I still miss Bailey so much.

Loving the pictures and account of Pinto’s first camping trip. We’re currently away with our 2 Romanian rescues on their first proper caravan holiday (we practised with a couple of overnights in the drive during lockdown). One of ours is a bit barky with people walking past when she’s inside and the other one is still very wary of people and unknown things, but generally they seem pretty relaxed and have adapted well. They also love being in the car and travel well, so all’s good.

They definitely enjoy their home comforts these days!

Aww lovely! Pinto is a bit barky with certain people. It's a bit embarrassing but she doesn't seem to like people with grey hair! Unfortunately although she took to my brother and sister in law, who have Willow, she wasn't keen at all on our friends and constantly barked at them which made things a bit difficult. They were very understanding and gave her her space.

She is probably still settling in.

Being a rescue, it is not possible to know her entire history, therefore, it may take a while before she is completely at ease and settled in her new environment.

Have you thought about getting her some of those yellow collar/lead/whatever that says "please give me space" or something similar?

It helped with some rescues and dogs with a nervous disposition that I knew.

All of our dogs have been rescues, and they all settled in just fine. Some do take a little longer than others, but with love and care and letting them go at their own pace, they all make it.

Elsa mostly barks at men - and especially larger men! Like you say, it’s pretty embarrassing but obviously from something in her past life. It’s good that your friends were so understanding though. With Elsa in a similar situation, we’ve been advised that the visitors should ignore the dog and once she’s quiet, say nothing but throw a treat near to her and keep repeating this so that she sees visitors as a positive thing and she will become more relaxed around strangers. We’ve not been doing this very often (we haven’t had many visitors) but it does seem to help her settle more quickly.

We do this at my mam's house. Pinto is still anxious there but is improving with each visit and each piece of cheese!
