Topic: Sort Camp sites by Review Rating

I would like to suggest a filter to show camp sites based on review ratings from x number of stars onwards, or the ability to sort by review ratings from high to low etc...

I would find these features more useful in my searches without having to trawl through the entire lists, especially for areas where there are many sites such as Cornwall and the Lake District etc...

Very good idea in theory, but would probably be an awful lot of work for someone. A full-time job I would have thought as reviews must come in all the time, especially in summer. Are they always accurate?

The problem with campsite reviews is that they are the opinion of one person on one particular visit and may not necessarily reflect the true and regular circumstances.

Some people may think for instance that 7 out of 10 stars is a good review whereas others may think 7 out of 10 is pretty poor. It is all subjective and one persons idea of a good site might not be the same as another's.

Reviews are handy but one always has to read between the lines and make an informed decision based on several reviews. I am not sure that star ratings on their own, are really representative or give a true indication of a campsite's quality.

Compared to what? A similar size of site? A site of similar price? your standards or mine?
You’ve got to read the review to get a feel for the site. If you use your own facilities you won’t much care about site sanitary facilities.
As said above it’s entirely subjective. Free or fast WiFi, or TV signal can be important or unimportant. And so on.

Agreed! I’d also like to be able to filter by unit type and number of reviews submitted by reviewer.

at Bob, when we’re planning our main hols I always look at Tripadvisor’s “awful” reviews: generally, the madder the complaints, the better the site.

When I mentioned sort by review rating, I meant the general overall review rating, and not by individual review ratings.

Each site, as far as I am aware, is awarded a general overall review rating, based on the average individual review scores it received.

I was thinking something inline with shopping on Amazon, in that one can select how many stars a products has been awarded based on the average ratings received. I normally select 4-star or upwards.

When reviewing a site that I am interested, I always read the good reviews as well as the bad ones, taking into account the year and month when the reviewer stayed on the site, in order to form my own informed decision about a site.

I tried to post a reply to this when we were away, dodgy internet so didn't happen. We like CLs/CSs and we use our own facilities, some folk would be horrified. One mans' meat is another mans' poison. I can't see how it would work.

That is exactly it. I can't see how it would work either as all our tastes are very different. I just read the reviews and get a general impression, then make up my own mind as to whether it would suit us. Some people wouldn't even consider a site unless it had a club-house, swimming pool, and a big playground for their kids, whereas if I saw a site described as such I would steer well clear.

As to site quality I sometimes wonder what some people expect. I have returned from a site before now and read a review that had clearly been published between when I looked last and when I returned, describing the toilets and showers as dirty and outdated, whereas I found them to be quite modern and spotless. Sometimes reviews I have read have made me wonder if the site described is the same one I visited.

I suppose it depends how you look at reviews. Listing by star rating wouldn't be a lot of help to me. When I look at a site I am interested I tend to read the reviews by motorhomers first. After that I will look more generally.

When you do a search in an area, as well as the map showing the number of each campsite in the circle, you also get the list of sites. It doesn't take many seconds to scroll down the list and jot down the numbers with the review rating you require. Then you can search for them on the map, or take a closer look.

So let me get this straight, Franners...

You're on the camp site search... You've pinpointed your area centre, and the radius you wish to search... You've clicked all the relevant boxes to narrow your search... and then you wander off into the kitchen to find that notepad and pen you last used in 1987, so you can "Jot down the numbers..."!

Ye gads, next you'll be saying some folk still keep one of those paper-map thingies in the car, because they don't trust satnavs!

The problem with maps is that if you don't know where you are in the first place, a map is pretty useless
