I did not say I would use less electricity on a pitch.
I said I would use less water compared with two people on site.
It is down to principle, and not the same as hotel rooms.
A double room for single occupancy still requires the same amount of housekeeping in cleaning and making the bed, and one less person potentially to spend money during their stay at the bars and restaurants.
Therefore, I can appreciate why a single occupancy surcharge would apply.
However, IMHO, the reverse is true for a pitch. Apart from using the same amount of electricity to power the van, I use less of water, use less of the facilities like toilet and shower compared with 2 people.
Therefore, IMHO, a discount should apply, even if it is a very small one.

To quantify cost of water saved & with cleaning being pretty much a fixed cost I'd be surprised if any discount would apply.
My lad could go on his own & use more water than me & his mam - guaranteed!
The same would probably apply in our case. We spend very little time on the site when we are on holiday, apart from when we are asleep. A single person who spent a lot of time onsite could easily use more water than us, and in any case, based on our usage at home I doubt whether it would amount to any more than £1 a day. The crucial thing in my opinion is occupancy of a pitch. If a single person is occupying a pitch that could have been let to a family of 6, they are effectively costing the site owner money, given the fact that charges tend to be per person these days.
I personally preferred it when sites just charged for a pitch regardless of how many people there were. I got quite a shock when I returned to caravanning after a break of several years to find that sites were now charging per person. If that had been the case back in the 1970s & 1980s we probably wouldn't have had many holidays at all. It was the fact that with a caravan you just paid for a pitch that attracted us as we were a family of 5 with two dogs. We couldn't afford to go abroad, or even to a hotel in Britain because we would have had to pay per person, whereas with a caravan we paid for a pitch, and then when we switched to boating on the river we only had to pay for a mooring. That is still the case on the river, although some marinas charge per metre of boat length. There is still a minimum charge regardless of the number of people onboard.
------------- Best Regards,
Colin
