When people camp and do a review if you get chance when on site .Would it be possible and you have few minutes to spare , to have a quick nosey see if disabled toilet/shower that can be accessed  independtley is available  same laundry room reception and post on reviews .That way we may be able to gather a list of sites that are known to be more accessible

It may encourage more people with disablites that they can camp

site owners .

Could when you say you have  disabled faclites.Actually consider it as a whole thing ,after phoning several sites that say have disabled faclites to find out that they have a toilet but is in main reception area and is locked over night.

Or mention after I have quizzed you  that there is only 1 or 2 small step`s .Also maybe worth mentioning if your laundry room /.reception area /shop is accessible .

To be told well as long as you bring someone to help you up the stairs it be fine .I like to point out been long fight to reclaim my independence after the acciddent put me in a chair and am not willing to give it up .Let alone i use a power chair most time when out ( means I can get over most surfaces and handle hills etc as anyone who saw me in new forest oher week can confirm ) so no one be  lifting that .

To be fair it is not only campsites that have come across this problem/hotels/pubs and resturants to

Thank you

Good idea, also worth asking site owners to keep the facilities available too, my parents recently visited Scarborough C&CC and the lock was broken on the toilet door so unusable, apparently it had been like it for a while too, very inconvenient for my disabled Mom & such a small, cheap job to fix.

You will always be fine for toilet and shower on a CC site that has disabled facilities as they all have ramps to them, they are "unisex" with own access, and now most use the RADAR key. If they have a different key they will supply the key on request.

I think most of the receptions have a ramp too. On sites with new facilities blocks, the laundry and dishwash also have ramps, but those with older blocks may not.

You can read the site's "access statement" before booking, or ring the site and enquire.

It is aslo possible to request a pitch close to the disabled facilities on most CC sites by phoning the site directly.

Thank you

Trouble is i need EHU and finding lot of the CC sites do not have available for tents .

Sadly access staements are not always very good and find i do need to ring sites and quiz .Hence why wondering if people can keep a eye out if they have the time and

Maybe then at some point get mods to do a sticky like there is for camps that except large tents or fires so at least gives peopel a starting point

Good point Des and I'll certainly bear that in mind when doing future reviews. A 'wheelchair' friendly search facility on the campsite search might be something the mods would consider too.

Do you mean like the Disabled Facilities Search option that is already on the campsite search facility?

No, he doesn't really because saying a site has disabled access doesn't mean that it is really accessible.

Des, how wide are you (in your chair, that is). I only ask because sometimes doorways can be a bit too narrow to negotiate if you're in a big chair.

There is a point to be made here, can it not be wriiten into the 'Tips for your Review' Ratty.
You really have to be in the position to make judgement of these things.I have to use a motorised wheelchair for my mom, unfortunaly i cannot take her camping but i do tend to notice things like this now.
I take it the OP has a radar key?

sorry I should point out that I am in fact female  Des are my intials .

Ratty I

used that and well when i called camps thats how I found out that some the toilet is not available over night ..Or they may have a toilet but no shower

Or the toilet may be ok .But I am not going to be able to get into the reception,shop/Laundrette/Dish washing areas which is pretty essential to me.imagine turning up at a site and you can not even book in as theres steps up or down and no way other than yelling to attract attention .Or you need milk/bread or even worse need wine ,  but can not get into the shop .

Disabled access can mean it has a few stairs wide enough to rest wheelchair on or back wheels inbetween or means it has a handrail which for some with moblity issues may be enough but handrail no good to me .

disabled access does not mean wheelchair access or in my case independent wheelchair access

.I can get over a small step by going on to my back wheels then pushing on them and leaning forward to bunny hop.But this is hard work and I need to be able get right over the step/ramp  and does require a lot of upper body strenth

It is not quite as clear cut as it seems ,May i politley suggest Ratty that you take a fresh look when your camping or out and about and think on what I have said .

.

A sticky/section then could at least give us a starting point to look/narrow down some sites .Just like people do when looking for sites that take larger tents or allow fires.

for example

Wellington country park says it has disabled Facilities and when I infact phoned them .The toilet is in main entrance and no access during the night and no shower .

.there is  no access to dishwashing area and the paths by the owners own admission said they are unlevel., compacted dirt and can have bits of root in and the site is infact full of hilly areas which I would expect being country park which be why i  use my power chair .As that is very hard to do in a manual chair

And when i spoke  to him he actually was very nice and agreed with me that maybe they need to relook at the Facilities sign .( know they do have permisson for a proper acces toilet/shower block  but no date as towhen )

Am not asking campers to do a full run down of factlites as peopel with disablites do have differnt needs and will always suggest people phone and discuss but would give me some choice  . ,but when they are commenting on things like shop/reception if they could spare a few seconds to just look and add a few words .

Camping with and or in a  wheelchair can and does happen have just come back from a camp where there was 60 or so familys many with a child in a chair  all staying in tents

Pilsey

I have a 18 by 18 manual chair and can get through normal doorways  and a larger power chair and do accept that I can not get that into some places .Though it is highly manuevable .Which is why I always take both chairs away with me .

And yes Suns I have a  radar key infact I have one in each bag I use as kept forgetting to transfer them
