sorry I should point out that I am in fact female Des are my intials .
Ratty I
used that and well when i called camps thats how I found out that some the toilet is not available over night ..Or they may have a toilet but no shower
Or the toilet may be ok .But I am not going to be able to get into the reception,shop/Laundrette/Dish washing areas which is pretty essential to me.imagine turning up at a site and you can not even book in as theres steps up or down and no way other than yelling to attract attention .Or you need milk/bread or even worse need wine , but can not get into the shop .
Disabled access can mean it has a few stairs wide enough to rest wheelchair on or back wheels inbetween or means it has a handrail which for some with moblity issues may be enough but handrail no good to me .
disabled access does not mean wheelchair access or in my case independent wheelchair access
.I can get over a small step by going on to my back wheels then pushing on them and leaning forward to bunny hop.But this is hard work and I need to be able get right over the step/ramp and does require a lot of upper body strenth
It is not quite as clear cut as it seems ,May i politley suggest Ratty that you take a fresh look when your camping or out and about and think on what I have said .
.
A sticky/section then could at least give us a starting point to look/narrow down some sites .Just like people do when looking for sites that take larger tents or allow fires.
for example
Wellington country park says it has disabled Facilities and when I infact phoned them .The toilet is in main entrance and no access during the night and no shower .
.there is no access to dishwashing area and the paths by the owners own admission said they are unlevel., compacted dirt and can have bits of root in and the site is infact full of hilly areas which I would expect being country park which be why i use my power chair .As that is very hard to do in a manual chair
And when i spoke to him he actually was very nice and agreed with me that maybe they need to relook at the Facilities sign .( know they do have permisson for a proper acces toilet/shower block but no date as towhen )
Am not asking campers to do a full run down of factlites as peopel with disablites do have differnt needs and will always suggest people phone and discuss but would give me some choice . ,but when they are commenting on things like shop/reception if they could spare a few seconds to just look and add a few words .
Camping with and or in a wheelchair can and does happen have just come back from a camp where there was 60 or so familys many with a child in a chair all staying in tents
Pilsey
I have a 18 by 18 manual chair and can get through normal doorways and a larger power chair and do accept that I can not get that into some places .Though it is highly manuevable .Which is why I always take both chairs away with me .
And yes Suns I have a radar key infact I have one in each bag I use as kept forgetting to transfer them
