Can you not right click the topic header, and choose "Open in new tab"?
That way, you won't lose the page you are leaving, as they'll sit side by side.
Personally, I have This page as my starting point (in my bookmarks). I scroll down to "Message board" then click on "View new messages since last visit". From there, each thread I click automatically opens in a new tab. (Also, once there, if you prefer, you can change (or refresh) the "since last visit" to "Last week", "yesterday", "Last 2 hours" etc, etc.)
Works for me... and you don't miss a thing!! 
*Apologies if the above link fails... as I'm logged in! It can be reached via the "Members only" tab (Yellow box) at the top right of the page.

Yup, I've always done it like that. Never had any need to use the back button on here.
