Oh good grief the poppy police are out with their 'facts'. A quick search like Bob61 did will show you these are urban myths. Seriously getting p'd of with all these sort of posts, and don't get me started on the people bashing because they aren't wearing one! Sorry rant over.
Poppies are used for remembrance because they used to grow in Flanders Fields which is an area in Belgium where WW1 battles took place. Poppy seeds can lie dormant for years but when the ground is disturbed they germinate (forgive the pun) and burst into life. The shells and bombs disturbed the ground at Flanders Fields and as the soldiers lost their lives, the life of the poppy began and marked the soldiers' graves.
As far as I know there is no other significance and it matters not which way it is worn.
As long as we respect the fallen in every war I dont think which way a poppy is worn matters. When I was young poppies were plain red with a resin centre to hold it onto a wire 'stalk' so there was no right way to wear them. What annoys me is people flying the Union Flag upside down on Flag poles
