I would like to see a filter for sites that have metered electricity as I would go for that every time if only I knew. Even with today's prices they would be much better than paying grossly inflated "paying for the facility" sites.

I stayed for two weeks on a lovely site with metered electricity a few years ago, and I paid less for two weeks electricity than most other sites charged per night.

Great idea Colin, with you all the way.
I don't know how easy it would be for the forum to gather all the info though.

Quite agree, beginning to see more and more sites that have a flat rate EHU charge that is extortionate (seen £5/night!), and quite simply profiteering! There are controls on what a site can pass on as a metered charge (basically charge at cost), but flat rate for EHU facility charges are unregulated!

As a start people could post of any sites where they have found it?

The site I stayed on was Stonebridge Farm Caravan Park near Weston-Super-Mare, and I would highly recommend it. I found it via UKCampsite.

I’ve just had a look at Stonebridge Farm as we might be looking for a short stopover in that area later in the year and sadly, their website says

“the caravan park is subject to a Compulsory Purchase Order for land to construct a bypass around the village of Banwell”.

At £5 a night that is very cheap with the site owner who is a commercial entity is paying £0.70 a kwh or perhaps more. Most site owners probably are profiteering, but just trying to break even! If anyone is profiteering blame the suppliers who are making their biggest profits ever!

That is sad. It is a lovely site run by lovely owners who were very friendly and helpful. It was very reasonably priced too when we stayed there, considering that virtually all the pitches were fully serviced without being charged a premium for such, and pitches were divided by lovely hedges. I reviewed it on here at the time. All in it worked out quite a bit cheaper than the nearest C&CC site, especially as the first two weeks of July when we went were still considered "low season".

At that rate, that's over 7kW hours per day covered! I generously estimate my daily usage in summer to be around 1.5kW hours, certainly under 2kW hours, powering 1.8kW water heater for 20 mins, 800W (1kW demand) Microwave for a minute or two, 800W Electric Hob ring for maybe 10 minutes, low powered TV, lights etc. for a few hours only! Paying for 4x or more of what I use is exploitation! Everyone in the supply chain is profiteering, the only one suffering is the end user!

Those that compare their known usage on metered sites nearly always say that fixed EHU charges cover FAR in excess of their actual usage! Sites all too often use it as a way to boost their profits from a pitch! And don't say it covers installation and maintenance of the EHUs, that's covered by general pitch fees just as water and drainage are!

Paying the sort of fees asked today for an "electric pitch" are truly a rip-off. Even if they were charging £1 a night extra, most people would be paying way more than they were using. On the site I mentioned earlier we were paying 20p a day on average and that was in 2019, so even allowing for the massive hikes we have seen since, we still wouldn't be paying any more than 60p a day.

We stopped at the CCC site in Oxford last year, without hook up. 100W solar panel on the roof and fridge on gas seemed cheaper than the extra £5 or so pounds a night for electric. It was spring, so bright sunny days and no need for heating.

We need TV, OH won't go away without access to Sky Sports. Luckily we can afford site fees, but £25 or more is unfair on those who can't.

We need EHU unfortunately as our fridge is a 240 volt only model fitted by some previous owner in our caravan's long history. We need it more than ever now as I fitted an electric water heater when our Cascade 2 decided to split apart spilling water everywhere, just as we arrived on site a couple of years ago. We still won't pay more than £25 all in though, and always try to pay less if we can. TV we can certainly live without. In fact we are glad to get away from it for a while. We have a 12/240 volt one that we could bring but we never do. We'd both rather be out exploring or read a book if we are stuck inside due to bad weather.

We always go out exploring, weather permitting. I read a lot at home but not so much in the caravan. OH only reads the newspaper. TV is for mornings before we go out, and evenings.

We never read newspapers at all, stopped having them years ago. Far too much rubbish, advertising, and biased views of the news. TV never goes on (or very rarely) before 5pm at home, but we still get fed up with it at times. We mainly use the caravan for sleeping in except when the weather is bad. We are always out and about. We do occasionally spend some time on the site in the sun, but usually on our sun loungers reading. We are both keen readers, and my wife belongs to 2 book groups.
