Yes! I do remember something. Doesn't apply to my van, no tricky covers to open, so only casual interest from my point of view. Of course, I may not be reminiscing about the same tool!
IIRC, the cover in question had catches that could easily be broken, especially as they aged and embrittled if not opened correctly, but the 'correct' method was not at all easy!
The 'tool' safely opened the cover with minimal risk of damage.
Pretty sure the tricky cover I'm thinking of was the Truma 'Dust Cover' on the heater gas flue outlet.

I found reference to the DIY pipe tool on a forum, bit no images.
Truma I believe used to sell a rather overpriced simple plastic tool for the job too!
