Has anyone tried the 12V cigar lighter electric coolboxes available in Argos for about £40?  Are they any good and how much can you get in?  Just want something for milk, yoghurt, butter.  Thanks in advance.

We bought a similar one from Lidl for £30 and it is great ...has a 12 v lead and a mains lead.  You can get a fair bit in there..OH put everything away in the attic or I'd go and check.. we tend to use it for milk, butter meat and  even a couple of bottles of wine!

We got ours at Halfords.  They are £35 + £13 for the transformer.

They are great.  It goes in the boot & runs off a socket in there.  Once on site it runs off a transformer off the EHU, also from Halfords.  It will hold enough for the three of us for a weekend, we generally stock up on fresh  stuff every couple of days  when away longer.  It isn't as cold as the three way fridge so it will not make ice cubes, but is more compact, lighter, & much quieter & less smelly.  You will need EHU to run one though - they would flatten a leisure battery very quickly.

See Auto Express for a review.

pay a little more and get the halfords 35ltr coolbox which can be used with door opening upwards or on its side opening outwards like your fridge at home,we used ours this summer with the 12v transfomer running off EHU for two whole weeks non stop and the temp in the box was always kept around 20deg below the ambient temp...

there made by waeco and is the same box as the outwell 35ltr one except as was pointed out to me the outwell one will run from 240v aswell as 12v

In our humble opinion Electric are noisy and inefficient they should be called not quite as warm boxes. We have a 12v in the boot of the car but the coolers we have had used to get so hot i never trusted them and the noise in the tent was quite irritating. We have a coleman cool box now they really do keep cool for 5 days amazing !Freeze your ice and pack it on top just before you go freeze water bootles or milk also.Once its cool its stays cool easy and most sites charge only a nominal amount for freezing your ice packs some dont charge at all.On top of that its much more environmentally friendly.

I disagree with previous post.  Noisey?  Not the one I have.  It has a little fan, that is it.  As for getting hot, well any device that cools something down has to exchange waste heat.  There is a grill on the side for this with instructions saying that there must be airflow.  Did you block this up?  As for the environment, what do you base that on?  How much energy is taken up by a large freezer on a campsite with a few cooler packs in it?  How much CFC gas do the older freezers use?  None in a cool box.  As for temperature, we were in Spain for 6 weeks  during Summer 2007, I never had a warm beer.  Get your facts straight please.

We have also had a Halfords 12/230v coolbox for a few years now and find it very good. The thing to remember is that they generally only cool to 20 degrees below ambient temperature so in very hot temperatures they won't cool as low as a domestic fridge. However its unusual to get such temperatures in the UK for any length of time! What is you power source going to be as it will quickly flatten a car battery if the engine is not running. No problem if you have an EHU.

We've been using an electric cool box bought from aldi/netto cant remember which. several years ago. Not expensive but quiet and efficient. I can see why some people may find the fan noise annoying but its not really intrusive.

One trick is not to use an extension lead if you put it in the boot . I suspect theres a current or voltage- whatever - drop that reduces the efficiency on ours and make sure the vents are always clear.

Ours has always ran warm to the touch on the top but thats just the heat exchanger, its also been left running for long perios of time , no problem at all.

we use the halford 35lit one, we start it of with a 2lit plastic bottle nearly full and frozen, if we go away friday and come back sunday the bottle is normaly still 50% frozen.

we dont leave it on overnight because it tends to freeze stuff.

we just dont keep things like cooked meats more than two days but milk, butter and salad things are great in it.

mike

ps when we first freeze the bottle we have the top of, but after that we never open it

they said it couldnt be done so i left it and went camping

We go away but without EHU is it ok to use one of these as a normal coolbox and then when you go out in the car plug it in to keep it cool until you return?

I've done that before but it is a bit erratic tbh.May be diffeent with other makes, ours has never frozen anything as mentioned above so maybe a more powerful one with ice blocks may manage that?

Hi,

I had a 12v cooler from Woolworths purchased for around £30 when on offer last year. But the fan stopped working when plugged in for more than about 4 days. If you want one for longer go for a fridge with both 12v and plug adapters as this will run for longer as they can be used in offices etc.

Got my new one from Argos for around £45

Hope that helps.

Our Aldi elec coolbox is good. Put loads in, milk, 2 wine, bacon, steak pack, eggs, butter, cold meat, pack of chops, plus a few more bits. Put in 2 ice packs for travel. Kept everything well chilled. There is a constant hum but nothing too intrusive. Kept it in the awning so didn't bother us at night.

We had one from Woolworths too and it packed up within 24 hours.  We took it back, got money back and bought one from our local camping shop and its been fine

i've got an electrulux one, its good at keeping frozen stuff cold, 2 nights on ferry to spain and milk still frozen on arrival. Down side it doesn't cool enough and as its top opening its a bit awkward, so i'm looking for a side opening one that cools a bit more than 20deg below
