I'm just about to shell out for 4 self-inflating mattresses. I've never used them before & want to get the right balance between comfort vs size folded.

5cms seems pretty thin - but a guy in a shop was telling me that most people are perfectly happy it. Anyone got any experience?

Where are you going to be using them... If you are travelling by car and looking for comfort... try a 4 leg camping bed, they are fairly small and comfortable

Or if you are looking for lightweight and comfort.. try a thicker one, but only 3 quarter length. It will only be your feet missing out.

I sleep very well on a 2.5cm Therm-a-Rest self inflating mattress. Mind you, I also sleep quite well on either a 6cm or 10cm Goldcamp mattress from Obelink.
Unfortunately, the only way to know if the mat. thickness is good for you, is to sleep on it, and that could prove to be an expensive mistake if you get it wrong. Do you know anyone who would be willing to loan you a mat. for you to try?

I suspect that the ultimate for me in car camping comfort, would be any thickness self inflating mat. on top of a camping cot. (Ooooh, the luxury!)

Hi
There is no delicate way to put this.
How much you weigh is important. Lighter people for will be comfortable on thinner mats.
I'm very happy on a 7cm thermarest and weigh 16 stone,
the other half can use a thinner one because, keeping her dignity intact, she's about half of me.

Hmm, this is interesting. We are currently having this debate here. My OH wants us to get inflating mats after many an airbed going to the bin after not enough trips out. We've had a break from camping for a couple of years. He wants mats. I think some of them look great and certainly the thermarest 7cm ones appeal to me on a technical level but they would have to be spot on for that kind of money! We've only really looked at Vango Adventure in the shops, hehe, he's so going to get a shock if I do buy the thermarests! OH is 6ft 4 and wears his weight evenly all over, whereas I'm a foot shorter and have a bit more weight around the hip so I feel that if I lay on my side I'll feel the ground??? I'm thinking of just getting a coleman dual chamber and to heck with it! I know he won't be pleased!

I found 5cm did not provide sufficient padding and was too low for my liking. So I use a blow up airbed instead.

I should have bought a double height single one, however, can't justify the cost, as I am still able, hopefully for a few more years.

Now, if, and a big IF, Tesco has a double height single at reduced price, then I may cancel my recently bought regular height single, that was left in the shop by mistake (not mine), and is awaiting my collection this weekend. 17

We bought a Vango double at 5cms thick and two Vango singles, also 5cms thick so we'll have 10cms altogether.  No, I don't know why we didn't just buy two doubles...[]

After our airbed died during our last trip, we bought a 5cm double sefl-inflating mat. Only had two nights on it so far, but we found it very comfortable. OH is 13 stone and I am, er, quite a bit less.

The only problem is that we found the shiny sleeping bag material slid around on the shiny surface of the mat, so we may consider taking a sheet to tuck around it next time out.

we use fat airics for most trips, at 7.5cm is very comfortable. Also have 3/4 length thermarest for back packing, which I am sure is only 2.5cm still comfortable enough but I prefer the comfort of the airic but the packed size is significant.

Alpkit do a money off deal if you buy them in pairs but they look to be out of stock on the site though

We've got very posh self-inflating 10cm mattresses (and, since we live in Switzerland, you really don't want to know what we had to pay for them 17).  Buuuuut... they are truly fabulous.  On non-camping nights, we sleep in a 6ft wide bed with a lovely memory foam mattress - sleep is very important to us! - and these mattresses are the camping equivalent.  And, as a sort of economy, they're good enough to be considered as a 'spare room' for guests in our office.

Is it possible to test them out?  Our local camping shop had them all in a big rack, and we just lay on them on the floor until we found the ones we wanted.

Oh, and if possible, get a design with two valves rather than one if you want to be able to deflate them this side of Christmas.

We madly budgeted on everything else - the kids have got 2.5cm self-inflating mats which we lay on foam karrimats for padding/insulation, the cooking pans were second-hand, and all the sleeping bags and liners were picked up at the army surplus store!  Ok, so they say 'Swiss Navy' on them, but hey, it's dark.

Thanks for all of the advice. In the end I've gone for the 5cm Outwell model & they seem to be fine (... although I haven't spent a night on one yet).

I have a thermarest toughsking inflateable mattress. The problem wih inflatable mattresses,is that they are very narrow,so anybody who has a wide body, may feel uncomfortable and slightly insecure during the night.

Hi Michael.

We have just returned from 17 nights Camping in Southern France, and for the first time used our "Thermarest DreamTime XL's", superb matts, they fasten together, so two make for a Queen Size bed, I had a double fitted sheet made to cover the double setup, what can I say, the bed was brilliant, not sure on the thickness but maybe around 10cm with the fitted sheet, I got a better nights sleep than at home, the "DreamTime XL" is 76cm wide, and is made up of a self inlating matt, which has a foam insert ontop, the whole thing is encased in a zip on fleece cover, more of a sleeping system than just a matt. the only downside is the pack size, which although only 4Kg is quite bulky.

I have a 5cm thermarest mat and it is fine. The main thing I find is that I need two pillows in order to properly support my neck and shoulders, so I have two inflatable pillows too!
