Well I have been meaning to do this Mod for a while, once completed it makes it easiar to install your EHU and also allows you to introduce your "Reverse Polarity" adaptor from in the tent instead of at the distribution post.

Personly I think EHU's should be made this way in the first place.

That actually looks like a good idea. I might do mine the same if the call ever arises for it.

Just a reminder to everybody, please don't try this if you're not fully confident in what you're doing.

I thought of doing this a while ago, then realised that it would partially defeat the object of the EHU as there would be an unprotected plug/socket prior the RCD.

Very industrious...but how necessary is it?

Modern appliances tend to work either way.

That's the same arrangement for a caravan hook up lead so no a problem.

Another advantage of separating the lead from the unit is that it's a lot easier to handle and store the unit and lead separately than it is as one unit.

One of the main reasons why I did this Mod was due to the fact that on my Cabanon Tent the Electric entry point is a very small zipped slot.

Probably designed just large unough for a 2 pin French style plug, although the std Commando EHU type plug does go through, but there would be no way that the EHU itself would go through the entry.

This meant that I have to drag the entire length of the EHU cable, some 20mts through the entry point in the tent, not to much of an issue when you first pitch, but after a fortnight of camping the cable would be covered in all sorts, and an attempt would be made to clean it before pulling back through the Tent.

I no longer have this hassle, and can now select from a range of cables dependent on how far away the Electric pitch post is away from the tent.

Also as Ollie mentions, my EHU is now much easier to handle.

Here is a photo of my improved shortened "Reverse Polarity" adapter, which if I am honest I have never had the cause to use, although my EHU does detect "Reverse Polarity" and displays it presence with a Red warning light.

That is a brilliant idea and a very neat job. I am not sure I would know how to do that myself and would probably wreck the unit trying.

What I did with my last EHU was cut the cable about a meter from the unit and add two plugs (male and female) which had the same effect and for the same reasons stated. It made it much easier not to have to thread 20 metres of kinking wire through that tiny slot and then have to drag it all back in again when it was soaking wet. The cable could also be wound separately onto a reel when not in use.

Yep Bob61, your solution has the same end result as mine, I just like to do things the hard way.

The parts were cheap, panel mount inlet and Female Commando cable connector, they came as a set £6 of Ebay.

Not quite the same, a caravan lead is off the ground out of harms way.

The reduction in safety is minimal but it does nevertheless exist.

Problem is Bernie, there is always a risk when Electricity is around, a kid could take a pen knife to the EHU cable, or stick a tent peg into one of the sockets.

I do not think my EHU Mod adds any extra danger to a EHU than all ready exists.

To remove the Commando Female Connector from the inlet fitted to the EHU requires a particular action, as the spring loaded flap on the Commando Female Connector is held in place with a Keep, which can be seen in my photo.

Simply pulling on the Commando Female Connector will not remove it from the inlet, as the Commando Female Connector Flap would first have to be raised from the Keep.

There's an RCD at the hookup post to cover that.

Good point Saxo 1, in fact due to other factors none electrical, my EHU is now safer to use than it was before my Mod.

I made this myself and it cost next to nothing as I got al the bit from work and then got it checked by a electron and passed it... I have got a shop brought one but it didn't suit our needs at all the one I made is a tad bigger than the shop brought one but better for us.

As you can see in the pic there are a few cables but there all required .. Let me explain :

Top cable going into the fully waterproof ip65 box is the power in cable from the site mains
Then the top left is light output then below that is a blue cable what is a switch what controls the light and can turn on/off while in the bedroom pod
On the right side the top cable is for twin socket (mk master seal socket)
Then the one below it is for the fridge/ light in the kitchen tent

All cables are 1meter trail with a weatherproof 16amp socket as all of the cable are cut to left to our tent so we done have any laying around ( the only cable are on show is the incoming power from the camp site post and then another 2ft or so from the kitchen tent were it based to our main tent ( what we do is to peg it down with some plaice staple so no can trip ect

Also it can be used on 16/10/6 amp camp site as it has a 10 amp mcb and 6 amp mcb so if we are on a 6amp site you can turn off the 10 amp mcb so you will only ever get 6amp and the same as if you on a 10amp site

If we are on a 16 amp site you turn both mcb

Iv installed a 30ma double amp rcd to keep us and others safe
We made sure we have used all ip65 rating too.
We also make sure it get tested each year ( start of camping season )

Outstanding, does it detect and display "Reverse Polarity" with a warning light?.

Only joking, nice bit of work, but beyond most I would think.

Believe it or not since this picture was taken a Reverse Polarity light has been added I'll take a picture in a while as just sorting a few things out
