I needed a stove for family camping, however with young children we'll have electric hookup so really needed a back up and support unit.

I was planning to buy the Olida as this works on the EN-417 cartridges which I already use. One burner will run for two hours at 3kW so I'd expect to use 1-2 cartridges per week which bought in bulk aren't that expensive.

In a rash decision I saw the Jimbu on sale and bought one. I'm only likely to need one burner most of the time, and if I did need two, I could just place a pan on the grill side. As a backup device it seemed good with an option of the grill.

Unfortunately, it didn't live up to my ideals for the following reasons.

Too heavy. Why make a cooker compatible with small gas cartridges and them make it weigh half as much as the LPG cylinder I'm not taking?

The grill doesn't really work as a grill. A mesh with cutouts did exactly what I expected it to. It burned the parts over the holes while warming the parts not on the holes. I tried toast, at a setting the didn't burn the toast near instantly where it covered the holes it took 7 minutes of constantly moving a slice of bread around and in the end it was sort of done, very uneven, cold with burned bits.

I tried a few more times will similar results. While I like that it has space for two slices, you can't toast with this.

It may be better with products that are more moist as they won't burn quite so easily, however I suspect you'd need to keep the items moving to manage the uneven heat through the holes as I think it should have a lot more open space to get the even cooking. If I do try this then I'll update the thread.

My other disappointment was the 'removable tray for cleaning' as I assumed that you could remove the burner surround, however this turns out to be a really small little catch tray underneath which collect the fat so it would be difficult to clean the unit while on camp and you're then left with the smell of fat if you bring it indoors at night.

It's not something I'd buy again, and if I hadn't used it then I would have sent it back.

I didn't pay anywhere near full price for it thankfully, hence taking the chance. However the well known high street chain I purchased it from has now discontinued both the Olida and the Jimbu.

Nice idea, execution needs some thought.

Edit: I would be happy with the Olida, it's the grill on the Jimbu that's the main issue.

We bought the Asado barbecue last year for our 7 week camping trip round Europe. We wanted something compact, yet with enough surface area to cook for 5 people. The convenience of gas was essential to us also.
We found the barbecue to be fantastic & surpassed all our expectations. Right up until it was stolen from the boot of our car outside Rome, along with a brand new gas bottle & many other items as well. We were devastated! We haven’t replaced it yet as aren’t camping until end of May half term.
I think winning this competition would be great!

I bought a Vango Combi IR Grill Cooker recently, after a week of family campsite cooking struggling with one of those silly little suitcase style Camping Gaz single burners that take the 'lock in' style cylinders with a flange (don't know the proper type name). Hopeless thing that guzzled gas. Luckily I had popped my lightweight Primus multifuel stove in the cooking box as a backup and second burner - it's a pocket furnace!

Anyway; back to the Vango Combi - this appears to be a Outwell Habanero cooker branded for Vango - we chose this over the similar Camping Gaz dual burner/grill as it appeared to be more sturdily constructed, and the burner output was somewhat higher; 1900W v 1500W, although nowhere near as high as the Jimbu's single burner at 3500W! The grill is a let down though; economical at only 600W but it takes ages to do a single slice of toast. I'm still pleased with the cooker overall though, as I hardly regard toast as a camping essential, and I have a small camping barbecue for serious grilling.

The Habanero runs from refillable butane or propane cylinders via an appropriate regulator - I wouldn't consider using disposable cylinders for family boot of the car camping.

As for barbecues, the whole point for me is cooking over a real fire, and I wouldn't give a gas barbie room in the boot of my car. My camping barbecue is made out of an old stainless steel pressure cooker - doubles as a mini fire pit too.

Well I sold my unloved Jimbu locally for near the discount price I bought it for so have now bought a discounted Olida from another store.

The Olida is around 3Kg vs approx 4.3Kg of the Jimbu so a more realistic weight and two powerful 3kW burners. I'm not sure why Outwell are incapable of getting the correct weights on their website

It may seem a little mad to run a family camp stove on EN417 cylinders, however WowCamping currently sell 6 of these for £19 so that's 2.7Kg of butane/propane mix vs £25 for the cheapest 2.7Kg Camping Gaz refil near me.

It's not really about cost, Red cylinder propane is a little cheaper, however the small size of these canisters in a bonus in pack size, I just squeeze a couple in and I don't need to replace a large cylinder early or carry two cylinders ready for the gas to expire mid cooking.
Two EN417 will easily last a week for my limited cooking and enough water for a brew boils in well less than a minute.

The olida is a nice stove with build in windshield. Only limitation is a 22CM pan size ( well 22 on one, 24 on the the other) unless you fold down the windshields.
