In the end I got an Igloo Max CoolBox 70 Roller from COSTCO for only about £35 - much less than RRP.

Why?  If I had got a fridge it would have been a 3-way - partly to keep us away from EHU areas so as not to be disturbed by the neighbour's TVs, etc.  Such a fridge would have to be able to cool to 30 degrees below ambient temperature and even second hand on Ebay these were going for at least £90+.  We wouldn't be away for more than five days at a time so a good-quality cool box seemed sufficient.

The one I got claims to be able to keep ice frozen for up to five days.  Although this is under ideal conditions (ie not opening the box!!) so many camp sites have facilities for re-freezing ice blocks, not to mention the option of bringing back a bag of ice from a supermarket on a provisions trip.

We go away early August for two trips of four or five days.  I'll let you all know whether we succumb to food poisoning!!

Good choice former scout !  We have one of those .. and have come home after 4 days away with ice still in the frozen bottles and eveything cool.. butter still not spreadable etc.. only bit of advice I can give you is to teach the kids to close the top properly  

We are going to use ours on a 9 day trip .. filling up with bags od ice half way though.. and maybe refreeze a few blocks. 

I suspect that I'm much more likely to teach the kids not to open the thing in the first place!!!!

We bought a standard domestic table top fridge from a small local retailers for £60 brand new and its been the single best thing we've taken camping!

Now we have Ice cold beers, ice cubes, fresh milk and produce all the time.

And with the scorching hot weather we've just had in North Wales we could not have managed without it.

We bought an ordinary table top fridge too like Bob and without doubt it is the best thing we have bought for camping. I can cope with most things in life but warm beer ain`t one of them.

On our last camping trip we managed to fit in 18 cans of lager, 5 bottles of bitter lemon (to go with the vodka) as well as butter, milk, bacon etc.

First posting.. though I've been secretly reading for over a year....

We've been camping for years but taking our first week long trip with our 4 year old in August and I've also been looking at 3 way fridges vs Cool box.

Nice to hear so many people recommend cool boxes. Had a quick surf for the Igloo Max CoolBox 70, and it does look a bit big. Do you know if Costco sell the smaller ones at all?

Welcome to the site, Bunnyrabbit.  It's good to "come out" after keeping it secret for so long!!

Regarding COSTCO and smaller Igloos - not in the Max Cold range - or at least not the Oldham branch. 

The Igloo Max CoolBox 70 Roller may look bulky, but don't forget that a not insignificant part of the space will be taken up with ice/gel packs etc.

mmm you've got a point there.... well I'm off to Costco on Sunday so will have a look see.

Nothing in Costco at Lakeside I'm afraid. So still not sure what to do. Hubby thinks a cool box will suit our needs well enough so will have to start looking at the new cool boxes. Just realsied I've hijacked this thread so will start a new one.
