blimey thats a rare one, I always thought that they were quite indestructable - tho I've never heard of the brand before. Like you say, it looks like an explosion or an impact.
Hi, I really hope that you are able to sort this out swiftly, I couldn't believe the pictures, awful, thankfully nobody was hurt by anything coming out of the roof box, or you may have found yourself in trouble rather ironically. I "googled" the make of your roofbox, and one company has stated that this comes with a five year warranty, so hopefully roofbox where you ordered yours from will have a similar policy.
It does sound like some kind of design fault that lead to the pressure inside being too much, and hence the consequences.
Sorry to hear about your fright mate. I would have been gutted. Get back in the saddle asap!
I was looking at the farad deal on roofbox.co.uk yesterday, as we need one. It seems like agreat deal and farad seem to have a good reputation from italy. I presume it's the 320 litre?
Let me know how you get on with investigations as i'd be kidding myself if I wasn't raising an eyebrow in concern.
Cheers, and best of luck in your quest for answers.

P.S. Just looked at the photo! WOW! I'm no physics prof but surely that wasn't air build up. The weakest point would give way which i wouldn't think would be the moulded plastic??
Scary experience - I'm sure that at least you're happy that the consequences weren't any worse
I've studied the photo carefully but I'm struggling to come with any plausible suggestion for what might have initiated the failure. A materials specialist would be able to determine the sequence of events. I would hope that as a minimum Roofbox would arrange for collection of the box and return to the manufacture for investigation. An independent investigation would be much preferable but I'd be surprised if they offered that.
Out of interest, what are the darker patches visible on the left hand side of the box?

I was not going fast.
Morning all. Possible explanation. Don't forget that we have had very windy weather this weekend with gusts of over 45 miles per hour. You may well have been travelling within the speed that the roofbox manufacturer recommends ( what is it, something like 60mph? ) but if you were driving into a headwind gusting up to 45mph then it would be the equivilant of driving at 105mph on a calm day.............
When you are driving a vehicle you get an area of low pressure behind your car and also the roofbox. Throw in some turbulance from the roof rack going in between the two areas of low pressure ( car and roofbox ) and anything can, and in your case, did happen...........
Hope you manage to enjoy the rest of your holiday. Hopefully it will become "one of those stories" that you can tell your friends whilst sitting round the campfire!

OMG you poor things that is just aweful and Im so glad no one was hurt - have you bought it recently as we were planning on buying a roofbox from the same company - has really unnerved me now seeing what has happened to yourselves :(
This could have happened to any roofbox - dont let it put you off. How many roofboxes do you see on the road everyday and then think of how many have accidents? Like someone said it could have been someone dropping a brick off a bridge.
Yeah I know hun and of course what you said is absolutely true that there are hundreds of roofboxes that nothing ever happens to just its a bit scary to think that that could happend and luckily nobody was hurt
I spoke to roofbox.co.uk. The customer services person understood the seriousness of the situation straight away and said that she'd speak to her manager and call me back. She did, five minutes later and said they replace the roofbox with a better one (a Kamai Corvara 475) and take the old one back for investigation.
We're still discussing the lost equipment, which they want me to claim for on my insurance.

What a fright! As others have said this didn't lead to an accident or someone being hurt which is something to be thankful for. However that doesn't belittle the loss of your belongings so I hope you get that sorted.
It was good to hear you got good customer service from roofbox.co.uk and especially that they have taken the issue seriously enough to investigate further. We bought from them last year, needed a box at the last minute, and found them great to deal with.
It will be really interesting to hear what happens after the investigation.
