Ta Tim. I was thinking along the lines of something like this kerosene heater. It's about 50 cm high and 40 across.

Point is: I need to take enough fuel with me for the three weeks I've planned and the bulk of that renders the stove useless as it won't all fit the car on transport...

If it's anything like a paraffin greenhouse heater it'll smell and give off smoke.

Thanks for the link Freebird and glad you agree with me on the Alkylate petrol versus Coleman fuel issue, there are still folk who use unleaded petrol and that's pretty nasty stuff to use as a stove fuel. I understand that the really expensive single burner stoves like the Primus' Omnifuel at >£100 will pretty much run on anything including diesel and aviation fuel, but that's for folk trekking in the middle of nowhere where they have to use what they can lay their hands on for fuel. Sure, they will work on diesel etc., but the stink and mess are awful!

Picking up on daveyhairbear's point, you're likely to get a bit of paraffin odour with your heater but I guess it's not like you're going to use it in a confined, totally enclosed space. I don't think smoke will be an issue though; from what I remember of paraffin lamps and heaters they only smoke if you have the wick turned up too high.

Please, let it give off a bit of smoke and pong! It'll surely keep those dreaded midges away as we've planned our 2009 holiday at the very North-West coast of Scotland!

I've read the leaflet again and it says that the heater was designed for use with paraffin. it also says it'll burn smoke- and odourless if the wicks isn't protruding too much. It also says I can keep a kettle on top or even use it as a slow cooking stove for stews.

I'll try it at home first, though and will get back to you with a report on practical use.

just for info kerosene = paraffin.
parrafin stoves definatly exist, we have a fairly modern backpacking one that runs on parrafin or petrol.

infact dont Trangias use parrafin?
Trangias in there basic form burn meths, however, you can buy an attachment to use pressurised parrafin.

Hello again,

I use paraffin/kerosene in a selection of old Primus, Optimus and Svea 3 legged Brass stoves and 'boxed' camping stoves.
I've posted some photos of these previously.
Also use Aspen 4T in my petrol burning stoves, Svea 123, Optimus 80, Phoebus 725, and for next week ends camping trip I'll be using Aspen in 2 Optimus multi-fuel stoves; the #11 Explorer and 111T.
Did I say I collect liquid fuelled stoves?

You should only ever burn meths/ethyl alcohol in your Trangia stove.
There is a rebadged Optimus Nova stove that you can fit to the Trangia windshield that will burn paraffin or petrol, but the small brass Trangia burner is designed for alcohol only.
Never try to use petrol in that burner .... very dangerous.

I'd really like a Bialladin Bowl Fire to compliment my Vapalux paraffin lantern, but they are hard to come by in decent condition and shipping one to Italy from the UK would be costly, that's why I'm interested in Wallas heater, they can be bought on German eBay too, and shipping isn't so expensive.

Changing the thread slightly i know but can anyone tell me what Alkylate petrol is and where to get it? We use a coleman Northstar lantern that i only use coleman fuel in because of the threads that i have read about on unleaded fuel and it cost a fortune. Just wondering about useing this fuel in it.

Hi again
The only trouble with Paraffin,It dose not burn clean and leaves a residue on the injection hole and will block it.
Always be sure to carry a pricker to clean it now and again.
Rex.

It's not a pressurised system but has a big round wick around a chinmey with a mesh firedisperser on top.So, no clogged up injector holes. Still, I am in the habit of taking my pricker on every camping trip; I'm very attached to it, you know

I've just tried it outside and it works a treat and doesn't smoke. It reeks a bit but not uncomfortably so and I can use citronella paraffin in it, which would deter midge while giving a better smell than the molten candle odour the paraffin gives off. The unit is large enough to hold a large tea kettle or a pot to have a four person slow cooking stew in it.

Since we aren't lightweight campers, we can turn a bit of a blind eye to weight.

Now, yours looks like the Esbit burners we used to have and huddle around when scouting, Rex. The mere thought brings a flood of tears to my eyes, just like the Esbitcubes did...

Ah thats it, not parrafin, knew it wasnt gas/petrol or similar, its years since Ive seen anone using one, I remember my mate a school had one for the junior section of the C&CC and everyone had one to learn to cook camp style on.
that was 15 Years ago now, and gas/petrol stoves have evolved.

Follow the link above.

Aspen 4T will work perfectly in your Coleman lantern, in fact it is arguably even cleaner than Coleman fuel, as this has a green dye added .... even though it looks water clear, it is in fact coloured.
Give Aspen 4T a try, you won't be disappointed.

We have a heater that fits onto the top of our "suitcase" type of gas cooker. I think its by Sunncamp. It looks like a silver tube and heats up beatifully then fits back into a small black plastic box when its cool.

Another early scouting trick was to use an upside down flowerpot on the cooker, somewhat like Paulinek has on hers. I think I've read that trick on this forum as well but I'm not sure.

Of course, every heater producing a fossil fuelled flame needs to have plenty of circulation to prevent you from waking up dead by carbon dioxide...

Toto and I have bought a teepee sort of tent with breather holes in the top and airing vents in the lower sides. Great to use our Tonysun Paraffin Heater in ánd stew a Dutch Oven or boil a kettle...
