I have had the same issue here in Cambridgeshire. My local recycling centre says it is not allowed to sell Camping Gaz cylinders.

There is one 904 0n eBay at the moment which I am bidding on - so I might be close to half way towards getting my pair of 904s!

Thanks to you all for your advice and information on this.

You can always try your local dump for cylinders - my local one will sell the cylinders for about £5 - and if you are lucky it can be full of gas as well
Good advice, go to the dump and buy a knocked about, partly rusty, possibly leaking cylinder that might cost you your life, but as on other forums at least you'll save money!!

Have had several gas cylinders from local dumps.some a little bit rusty, some with gas in but all have been in a safe serviceable condition.just use your common sense,if they look knocked about or a bit dodgy then dont bother.

If you knew what calor do to re-furbish a cylinder which is returned to them you'd be amazed. everything is dismantled and checked. You cant tell what they're like by looking at them and using your layman judgement to decide a cylinder is safe, it's just not worth the risk.

Re finding 904 cylinders

Thanks for all your help on this. When I went to get a 904 which I won on ebay I was able to get a 907 as well - the two of them for a fiver!

I understand the concerns about using potentially unsafe cylinders, but what I have bought is empty cylinders which can now be exchanged for reconditioned and refilled ones from an authorised Camping Gaz outlet. So I have saved money without compromising safety, and avoided a couple of cylinders from being dumped in a landfill or worse.

Hi smngdfry.

Good work, it took me almost three Months to find two 904's and one 907, costing the grand total of £3!, so I think we both deserve a pat on the back for being such tight wads!, anyway it is a pity that the staff down at the tips (recycling facility's), are not told that if they ensure a gas bottle is empty by sticking a probe in the valve thus releasing all the gas, so making the bottle safe, then they could let the public have them for say a nominal pound, as you say even if the bottle is faulty, it will be refurbished before it ever gets filled in anycase. my only concern is that some staff may be tempted to put a light to the escaping gas, for the effect.

Francais and Smngdfry,

I think you two should be running the economy!

John.
