We have the three network dongle and it gets a very good hspda signal over most of the north wales coast. When the hspda signal is recieved the download speed is around 1Mb/s. Our usual broadband speed is 2.6Mb/s.
I would imagine using a phone will give a slower service - it would have to be a 3G phone.

There is the usual "fair usage level" clause, but this is 25Mb per day, so unless you're downloading lots of music/video etc, it should be enough....

I bought an unlocked "three" dongle off ebay and get internet for £5 per month -no contract.
how?
buy an unlocked dongle which will take any sim card. then get a "three" pay as you go simcard and top it up with the minimum amount - £10. put it in the unlocked dongle and go to "my three" and buy an internet add on for £5 which will last 30 days. I find it is fast, no faffing around with your mobile and you have a choice in the rare instance that you're in a place that doesn't have "three" coverage - just swap your sim for a T mobile one. It's good for emails and general surfing but not for large downloads i.e. movies etc. there is a 1gb allowance. It's great in that you only use it when you want to i.e. if your caravan is in storage why pay for a service you don't use?
scrufts, you might just have solved all my problems! I've been thinking for a while about having some form of mobile internet for emails and general surfing, but as I would only use it when we are away for weekends in the caravan I couldn't justify paying a monthly fee on top of what I pay for my broadband at home. It sounds like your set-up would be ideal for what I want.
