I have used the thicker "thermarest" self inflating mats for abt 10 yrs. With an old army blanket doubled underneath very comfortable. Roll up fror transporting. S ometimes take an inflatable as a sunlounger- saves space.

we bought the campingaz air beds from argos - tehy are 2 single that zip together to make a double or you can fasten them one on top of the other to make a double height bed. We find if we put a foil blanket underneath there is no need for extra layers and they pack up really small as well as being comfortable.

Our friends went one further and bought a set each so they could have a double height bed and they said they were warmer because of it (not sure how true that is).
