Hello again all,

Just a little update and for future reference of all supporting postings.  SUCCESS. I swapped the Sky digibox for another spare that I have (Sky+ Amstrad DRX 180) and pointed the dish 146 azimuth bearing (good compass) and 25.6 elevation, switched on box and it was already pointing at the satellite.  I knew I was doing it right.  Admittedly the signal strength was improved by some minor shoves.

The problem is with the original box (Amstrad DRX 550) probably software is my guess.  I thought it was a bit suspicious that I was getting no signal strength reading at all.  As stated earlier it worked fine first switch on but not since.  I would like to solve the problem of the older box if possible as it is nice and small and we only have a small van, so if anyone can help I would appreciate it.

Dead chuffed that I can find the satellite with no finder or signal detector even with digibox turned off, but a bit miffed that yesterday I ordered a bl**dy finder.

Hi the box is faulty
apparently it's a common fault with the internal power supply had it happen to me on a dish that was fixed.
Turned mains off at fusebox, forgot to turn off Sky when power was restored "No Signal" displayed.

Hello macaw,

Thanks for reply.  Surely if the power supply went, you would get a blank screen.  The message I was receiving was coming from the Sky box, not the telly.

It read "No satellite siganl is being received"  Correct me if I'm wrong but I reckon your message was coming from the telly.

Problem is with Sky box's is that the capacitors in the power supply start to dry out, as macaw has already pointed out, it is a basic form of engineered obsolesene, and the faults it presents take on many formats, from the loss of a few channels to no sat signal being received, repair is often non economic, unless you are handy with a soldering iron, which most folk are not, but presents Sky with an oportunity of getting you onto MultiRoom, or Hi-Def, all in a bid to extract more money from you, when I worked at Sky, either doing installs, or marketing, it was all about the ARPU, if you could squeeze more money out of the punters, then a bonus was comming your way, and for me it often did.

Hi again the message I got was from the SKY box as it would power up and no matter what I tried kept returning to "No satellite signal" displayed tried another box all okay.
Told it was internal power supply problem.

Well done! It's like riding a bike, once you've done it, it usually takes two minutes every time.

I've always found trying to set the direction up very accurately before you try the telly is a waste of time, but like you, I once did it by accident.
For instance, the satellite isn't always in the same direction, it depends where you are.
