We have been told at last couple of campsites that BBQ's ok but no fire pits. apparently it is against the law to have fires at certain times!!!!!! and local fire brigade has warned campsite owners of possible prosecution????. Suppose in a way sensible given all the talk on global warming,

Ahhh, but how about a BBQ with wood on it? As far as I know that would still be called a BBQ! And whose to say you that food must only be cooked over charcoal? We cook a lot over wood (well, the charcoal from the wood that has been burned).
Global warming, per se, is not the issue. Global warming seems to have altered climatic systems throughout the world in different ways. Some parts of the world have seen reduced rainfall and even suffer terrible drought whereas other parts of the world have seen increased rainfall and/or increased intensity of rainfall. Let's face it, we've had a damp few years and water tables have been consistantly high. Our countryside is not tinder dry at the moment so fire risks are surely relatively low.
I went to one campsite and the regulations had changed from open campfires to fires off the ground. I asked about this and was told that to have open fires the site needs to pay for permission or a permit or something, but fires off the ground are acceptable.
I've just tried to do a google search for these kind of regulations to find more info but can't seem to find anything. Anyone know where I could look?

we love the notebook grill you can get them from go outdoors and amazon, although i would DEFINATELY go for the larger size! our whole group of camping friends now have these as their great and simple and super as a fire pit!
We prefer the diy approach and use washing machine drums for fire pits, I mount them on legs and they are very safe when the fire starts spitting and I have a lid for mine made from an old stainless bin lid, this gets put on at the end of the night, no need for a bucket of water then.
We have also cooked on ours by placing an old griddles on top.
The Best thing is a simple 'Fire in a metal Bucket'....just buy yourself a good old fashion metal bucket and stick a grill on top and stand the bucket on a couple of bricks...
