£30! Haven't seen any that cheap so far. Friend suggested I buy a plastic BBQ cover to cover camp kitchen at night/when we're out(I actually bought a chair cover, better size. Only £1.99) so stove and pans etc will be protected and can leave it out. Still need cover when cooking in rain so so far the poundland tarp is favourite. Bound to rain at some point, its the seaside!

Pally - they've gone up a little since I bought it, but here's where I got mine from, and they are still only £34, well worth the purchase, they get you completely out of wind & rain, they get all the cooking gear & misc rubbish out of the living area of your tent, and it is MUCH safer to cook in one of those than somewhere that kids/dogs etc can bump into you and burn themselves etc...

2011 plans:
April - Exmoor 11 nights
May - Brynawelon, Wales 3 nights
July - Rendlesham Forest 4 nights
Then I am off back home to Australia, where the weather is always perfect for camping :)

It is actually not too bad cooking in the rain - just make sure you keep the matches dry. No point trying to use a lighter once your fingers are wet. I found out the hard way on my birthday in the Dordogne 2 years ago - got absolutely soaked. The sauce I made for the prawns was thinner than I had intended but the veggies were well washed before I cooked them!
Just light the rings when they have pans on them.
Saves any faffing about with tarps/

I can't believe that someone would stand in pouring rain to cook.  We've always cooked in the tent (30+ years).  I've never seen a spark come off a gas cooker.  As long as the cooker isn't pressed up against the side of the tent I can't see the problem.  Maybe if you are deep fat frying there's the possibility of a fat fire but apart from that where is the problem?  Heresy?

I too worried about the effects of cooking in my Vermont L and some site owners who charged for two tents if you used a stand alone cooking tent.  So I used this and dispite the "leakage" claim of one argos review, I found it works admirably even in very wet weather I have never had a wet stove. We had the full test in Cumbria last weekend and not a leak!!

well, perhaps an exaggeration then genie04 - and he can fry and microwave really well. I'm better at cooking, he's good at things with screws or wires or error messages. Stick to what you're good at I always say. Anyway, if I'm cooking he'll have to entertain the kids, so even in the rain it sounds a good deal! (Love them to bits really!)

We use the same Outwell Revolution suggested by Scubabe and it is brilliant. We have our camp kitchen in ours to cook, it also houses our fridge, overnights the chairs and the door flap makes a good sun shade if you can fix it to the back of a tailgate/trees/main tent etc.

Once you get the hang of it, it is quite literally 5 mins to put up and 5 mins to take down and if you take down in the wet, just throw it in a carrier bag.

We usually camp in a cabanon frame but just returned from a trip that included a couple of the stages of the Tour de France and used a two man back packer c/w this utility tent and a tarp and it was great fun.

We also use a windbreak with a canopy...I set up my cooker stand and table under it along with my cool boxes . You can cook your bacon in a morning whilst admiring the view and staying dry!! PLUS as it is a wind break you will never be charged extra for using it unlike expensive utility tents.

If your on a budget this is a great option .Lidl have been selling them for around £15.

It is by far my best buy so far as I love cooking outside!

When i was a child, myself and my family use to drive to a river a few miles up the road.on the river bank, was a very old derelict house, with no roof, doors windows etc, literally a shell.Anyway, one day,my mother brought along some of our camping equipment, stove etc,and decided to cook something on the river bank.Unfortunately,it got windy and the rain appeared. So,my mother hit on the idea of using the 4 walls of the derelict house as a wind break. It worked a treat,as the walls also stopped most of the drizzling rain from the direction it was coming from.
As a thought, you could try and have a look around the camp site and area nearby,to see if there are any large hedges etc that will block the wind and rain.To cook in a derelict building is great fun,and if you come across one, your family will love it i'm sure.we found it was well worth walking a few extra yards, for the fun of cooking in the derelict house.
