Since getting flooded out last year at brean I have now invested in a submersible pump.

hope I don't need it this year but it is good insurance anyway

In addition to the advice above.... I love my wet weather Crocs ie the ones without holes in. Brilliant for camping in the British summertime

And I always use a raincoat for the dog. Just a lightweight one as I don't want him overheating, but one that covers his chest and tummy as well to keep as much of him dry as possible without him being completely humiliated! Its much easier to deal with a wet dogcoat than a wet dog.

We always take waterproof trousers and try to make sure everyone has got 2 waterproof coats, in case one gets absolutely soaked. Decent waterproofs are a must in this country, whatever time of year.  There is no reason why you cant have a good day out, even if its raining, so long as you are wearing the right gear.

I prefer walking boots for the kids too, much more comfy than wellies and if you shop about you dont need to spend a fortune.

Believing in the "no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing" we always have plenty of wet weather gear.  With 2 dogs we don't have the option of just staying in when it's wet so we always invest in good quality gear.

I have a couple of Berghaus Gore Tex jackets - one just a light, pack away type that easily fits in a back pack, the other is a heavier one that I can zip a fleece into if needed.

OH is more a fan of The North Face and Paramo so he has a light, packaway Paramo waterproof and a TNF heavier, Gore Tex jacket.  He also has a pair of Gore Tex trousers and some Gore Tex gaiters (can't remember who made them).  He wears Scarpa Gore Tex boots or, if it's really yukky underfoot, he has a pair of le Chameaux Gore Tex boots that come part way up his calves.  Quite heavy but apparently very comfy and 100% waterproof.

Being a little short, fat person, I haven't been able to get Gore Tex gaiters so have on occasion had wet feet when we've had to cross swollen burns, etc, and the water has gone through my gaiters and in the top of my boots - either Scarpa lightweight or Zamberland "proper" walking boots - both Gore Tex - starting to see a pattern here?!  However, I've finally found a pair of waterproof trousers that fit perfectly!!

I got these in Navy blue - http://castlebergoutdoors.co.uk/acatalog/copy_of_copy_of_Cascada_Trousers_Mens.html.  They are horrendously expensive at £95 a pair but they are so soft and comfortable with virtually none of the usual "rustle".  They have vents on each leg that can be unzipped to allow air to flow (when it's not pouring with rain, obviously!), they can be worth with or without normal trousers and they unzip up past the knee so it's easy to pull them on or off even when wearing boots.  I'm almost hoping for bad weather to give them a good trial!  They got a bit of an airing lst time we camped and they kept me dry whilst completely cutting out the wind, and we were right on the coast.  Expensive but they dried quickly, allow plenty of room for movement and I'm delighted with them!

We hate getting wetter from the outside in as we sweat so we always go for the best quality waterproofs we can buy - not necessarily the most expensive but that sometimes happens

Go with what your budget allows and you feel comfortable in.
