We have the Roller version that you mention.

Most of the time it is long enough, but because the lead has to come in the back porch of our tent and we then position the EHU in the front porch area, (has to cross the living area), it adds quite a few metres to the distance the cable has to go, especially if we put the cable thru the velcro loops across the roof.

We have only had 2 occasions where it didnt reach, one site lent you (free of charge) an extension cable, and the other time, we just had the cable running around the floor instead of up and over.

I am sure for most tents and pitches the roller EHU would be fine.

It is easy to pack away at the end as it just rolls away , we did watch someone packing away a few days ago who had the '3 in a row' type and that did look a pain to pack away, they had it laid out in one long length, then they rolled it around there arm, then it got twised, eventually it was neat and they got it in the bag!!

It is handy having four sockets (cool box, kettle / charger, heater, light) and because of the layout you could get 4 charger type plugs into all four sockets.

Cheers. Of course what I wanted was what I couldn't have: a neat and tidy Roller with four separated sockets plus the twenty metre lead of the triangle one!

Decided on the triangle one with three separated sockets and the twenty metre lead as my best compromise. I can use the spool thing (not sure what this is called) from the old ehu for keeping the cable tidy when not in use and we are unlikely to ever be desperate for four sockets as when the ehu is used it is just  for the fridge plus occasional chargers. We did once run a fan heater off it as well so I guess that could happen again too. The only other thing I could think of we might use it for would be the laptop, but I've only ever taken that once and wasn't keen.

And, yes, you're right - I'm overthinking this!

Hi Merry.

How camping has changed, first time for me this year with EHU, and I first went camping back in 1962!, but hey what a difference, I used the Sunncamp straight 3 way c/w 20m cable, plus a 25m EHU extention just in case, although that was not used on this last trip, I also ran a feed into the Kitchen tent for lighting and the electric travel kettle etc, in total I had 16 sockets available, and only one went unused, however did I cope in the past me thinks. I had my amp monitor with me, just to make sure I was well within the site's 10amp supply which I was. no going back to basics for me now though!.

we just got back from seaview kent. We were about 40m away from the hookup as our ehu pitch had to be moved to a non ehu one and we had to hire a cable - generally though you should be near a ehu

Definately go for as long as you think is reasonable.  Last year we went to Anglesey, and if our EHU cable had reached we would have had opportunity to pitch virtually on the beach edge.  As long as you have room to carry it, it can't hurt to have one that is too long for 9 out of 10 pitches, but for that one in 10 it will have been worth it.

Blimey!

We are lucky enough to to be able camp ehu-free most of the time but it is useful for the fridge plus chargers for longer stays eg over a week - although even then we could really run the fridge off gas and charge phones in the car or the campsite office.
