Dare say you're right they will not check the cable but if they do.....? Anyway C&CC say

The use of a second cable should be avoided, but if used it must be fitted with the British Standard plug and connector. The connection between the two cables should be raised off the ground. Taped cable joints and ordinary 13 amp plugs and sockets must not be used under any circumstances

You can buy the male & female 240v ehu connectors for a couple of quid from Screwfix. They're as easy as wiring a domestic plug.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm going to shorten it, but I don't think I'll put plug and socket on both the cut ends so it can be joined again, cos I suspect a joined lead, especially on the ground in the wet, could be a bit dodgy. If we ever move to another seasonal pitch I'll have to buy a new long lead.
