Just had to order new airbeds, went away at weekend, didnt check airbeds because they were fine last year, wish i had checked them as we were all on the floor by 1am !!

Trying the Outwell excellent airbeds this time because of extra height, we previously had the Royal airbeds, not bad but wanted something a bit higher.

We have tried most of the airbeds and in the end we got an Intex Comfort Queen Frame air bed. Not cheep but what a bed and with the slightly raised edge of the frame section it gives the bed so much more stability and I dont end up on the floor as I did with the standard type.

The only draw back is the size of the bed as it wont fit in some sleeping pods.

We bought our three double airbeds in Aldi & they've been very good so far. They're the first ones we've had that haven't needed pumpimg up during a week away after we've set up. I'm not sure how often they have them in but they're very good value at around £14.99.

Hi Andy, I used to use the blue/red type for years (the same one for 15 years!).. it truly felt like camping.  Got fed up finally with the raised in-built pillow that just felt wrong to me, interrupted my sleep, I wanted something more luxerious.  Last year invested in 2 theromorests (5mm).  Comfortable ... very comfortable.  Cost quite a bit though (but then as you know, since I live abroad, I can't avail of UK prices).

The big difference I noticed with the lower height thermarest vs the blue'/red type is that immediately a lower bed makes the pod feel SO much more spacious, it felt great for that reason IMO.  So to me, having a higher bed means closer to the ceiling of the pod, meaning it makes me feel clostraphobic, like sleeping in a coffin!  I have never tried some of the raised beds that people are talking about on this thread, they look the biz though.  For my own part, I'd just wonder how I'd feel about sleeping to close to the ceiling height!

I was not able to get (locally) a flocked thermarest, so have bought a fleece blanket and made it into a kind of a pillow case for it ... this means it has fleece bottom and top of the thermarest, and my sleepling bag on top of that.  Very snug.

PS, like you am a new WL5 owner as you know, and space in the car has suddenly become a huge concern.  My double red/blue was bulky.  The thermarests take up no space, tinee weeny in size for two of them.  If space in your car is an issue then check out the size of the big airbeds perhaps to make sure things would fit in car.

Am thinking I'll have to invest in a trailer next year.... and keeping the camping gear in it most of the time as storage.  Am worn out lugging the gear in from the car and out again all the time.  If I can get a hard top trailer and use it to store the gear, my life would be complete!

Good luck in

your choice!

Humbird
