The asda one is similar with the same solder quality!Theres no electronics in there to step down a 12v current.
Is there a diode to prevent you using the wind up generator to charge your phone?

Glad I didn't take mine apart to have a look now! It's not bad for £3.50 tho, I certainly wouldn't spend more (well, maybe a fiver), it was more of an impulse buy really, probably knocked up in some sweat shop somewhere (you just can't get the staff!). Mine's safely stored in my parents loft, awaiting my trip to france. I was just going to use it for those late night visits to the loos, or from the car to the tent if I'm late back one night, certainly not my primary lighting source, far from it.

Regarding "conditioning batteries" my older brother & me both got electric tooth brushes for christmas about 4 & a half years ago, I always charge mine fully & use it til it runs flat, he used to use his & put it back on the charging base. Mine is still running strong & holding charge for around 2 weeks, he had to throw his out 2 & a half years ago!
