Buy the cheap mobiles and a payg sim. I bought my kids 1 each. £12.83 from the CPW with £10 credit on. It was a couple of years ago, but I've seen similar in Asda etc since. Basic phone - makes and receives calls.

Longer range (depends on where you are of course) and you can let the little blighters run the credit down and still call you so you can return the call to them. Use them when they are out and about at home too. Great for getting them in off the park! Get 'em on Orange and get the 241 Orange Wednesday deal at the Cinema. Great.

Depends on how old your kids are. When we went abroad camping with mine we bought them 'special' watches and they had to return every 20/30 mins. If they did they got a treat, if not they were grounded. When they were older we got them cheap mobiles. But each time they had to tell us where they would be and were warned of dangers of not being where they say they would be. Worked for us every time.

A good point, that I fully agree with tho' fudgetastic, they are no substitute for supervision and regular contact.

They are also great to find your husband. We all announced 'tent to dad - tent to dad' a little quiet voice came back 'I am on the toilet', we laugh every time we hear the story.

I have a 3 year old boy and he won't go anywhere without his walkie talkie when we are camping, we've personalised his with Fireman Sam stickers.....a must have apparently so he can tell which is his and which is our handset. Anyway, we researched A LOT of models as were concerned about range etc and eventually went for the TLKR T4 model from these guys TLKR T4 Model
It seemed to have good reviews as this was the cheapest we could find it, it's a good tough little model (has been dropped numerous times) and has belt clips so the are less likely to get lost. Our friends who we go camping with a lot have recently bought a set as well so we all just tune to the same channel and hey presto - everyone knows when tea is ready!

Remember mobiles have limited coverage in the more remote sites especially in Scotland so would not depend on them.

I agree for kids buy the cheap radios with the codes on them and they will love them. We have lots of them running around but i always give my daughter one of our 5 Watt full power licensed radio to ensure we keep in contact without the prying ears.

But surprisingly the jump from 0.5 watt to 5 Watt sometimes only gives a difference of 100 metres range. So the cheap radios are just as good all you lose out on is build quality and for kids thats not an issue.

You can also get ones with a range alarm and if the kid goes too far it alerts you. Basically its a power meter that goes off when the received signal drops but this can be terrain dependent so not very accurate.

We got our son walkie talkie when he was at that age where all he wanted to do was to go off an play on the playground (which was in another camping area).
When I called I never used his name - just his nick name so he knew it was mum or dad. Majority of the time he ignored it. We also has random people answer as ours was limited to 8 channels, so occasionally you got someone else's mum telling the kids dinners ready get back to the van! We also did get someone shouting for help we are stuck down a hole but assumed this was someone messing about seeing as ours has a limited range and I don't think there were many holes in the campsite to fall down.

That's why you need to get ones with the selectable tones and that stops all the cross conversations, it only add about 5-10 quid onto the price.
