If it's a question of a loo or no loo, I would go for the loo every time.

If it's a question about the Kampa Khazi, or the Luggable loo, I got the Kampa Khazi because of it's apparent sturdiness and it's discounted price at the time(£13.99 Charlies direct). I've given the loo has it's own orange blanket, and just put in the corner during the day. I keep anti-bacterial floor wipes (which are the same as antiacterial wipes only much bigger and stronger) and also a packet of disposable gloves.

It gets used mainly at night time, and my boys of 12 and 13 are instructed to sit down, which they've accepted without question because it's either that of a damp trek to the toilet block. I empty it every morning and swish it out water. If there's no elsan point I put it down the loo in the toilet block. 

The Kampa Khazi, with the inner bucket removed, can be turned upside down and the interior space packed. My Intex double height single sized airbed fits neatly in there and the bucket goes on the floor by the kids feet. On the outward journey I filled the space in the bucket too with torches and things.

If it's a question about a bucket type loo or something like a thetford, I think, that if you have the money you'll probably appreciate the way the waste is much more contained, and therefore it should not develop a smell even if not emptied for a few days. However you wouldn't be able to use it as packing space then, and you'd have to make sure you have somewhere to put it in the boot of your car, trailer etc.

Personally, I can't stand the smell of the blue chemicals. My parents got one of the cassette loos with a caravan they bought when I was a teenager. It was a horrible, smelly thing, that was urine yellow coloured. Yuck.

we use a nappy pail from mothercare - only £6.99 and has a lid and handle... it is sturdy enough for use by all of us (I have 2 small kids) and can be used as a fire bucket during the day.  we add a little zoflora for night time use to keep it smelling fresh and to keep bacteria at bay. I would recommend the pail for many reasons - cost being a major one!

We had a "bog in a bag". Collapsible toilet frame with seat on top. Plastic bag fits and secures under seat. Plastic bag has absorbent pad inside for urine.

Positive: lightweight easy to pack cheap unit cost.

Bags aren't so cheap and was advised by shop just to use strong plastic bags or double up carrier bags (not a good idea!).

Negative: doesn't really absorb a lot.
Not good for Number "2s" although using the chemical in the bag seems a good idea hadn't thought of that. Disposing hygienically is not that easy. One campsite we went on positively refused to allow us to use it as they felt they weren't approved, didn't want bags down the disposal drain, and didn't want bags or contents in household waste bin. Can't blame them really so we ended up taking it home (one night stay only not so bad but a week arrrrggghh No way!!)

Have got some urine bags for emergencies. They have crystals in that turn urine to gel. Can reseal the bag and be used couple of times (in theory) but depends on how much you wee I suppose.

Eventually got fed up with all the rigmarole of buying bags, problems disposing of it. Bought Kampa loo. Suits us ok. Ease of use, emptying and no smells with correct chemical. We use it in the tunnel part of the awning so separate from food and where we relax so that's useful for privacy and hygiene .

Shame it is a bit big when transporting in the campervan, but I would rather but up with a bit of a squash to have the relative comfort of a loo that's easier to use and empty.

We have the folding loo with bag option, not the expensive version that suggests absorbant bags but the simple Highlander version (I remember using the same thing as a child so the idea has stood the test of time. The British army also use the same concept in Afganistan). No problem - easiest of the lot!

No need to add anything absorbant. Just do what you need to in the bag and then empty the contents at the Elsan point (just as with any porta loo) and bin the bag. We have a flexible chopping board as a lid which does a good job with the smells. No washing or disinfecting a bucket or cassette. A quick wipe of the toilet seat and lid with a dettol surface wipe - done!

I agree with previous post from Speedcamp.  We too have the highlander loo and wouldn't change it.  Its small and compact - easily cleaned with wipes, we use fragranced bags from poundland with the trug underneath for mishaps with the bags leaking and also for discretion when we take to toilet to empty in the morning - no one know whats in the trug do they!  It folds down through the day so no need to have your loo on show all day.  Its only for #1's and there is no need for chemicals as its only overnight - never had a problem with smells or insects as we spray the tent early evening for bugs and close all the doors anyway.  Takes up very little room in car - prefer taking the beer fridge than a big loo!

Just a thought - I've seen a few messages on the forum about fly spray being bad for the tent - something to do with affecting the treatment on the flysheet. May be something to check...?

BTW - have you thought of putting a bin bag in the seat during the day time? - makes an excellent waste bin (main reason why we added a lid - keeps the flies away when its used as a bin)
