Living on a Scottish island, carriage is HUGE bugbear!
You want to buy an item - even a small one - and find a good price only to be told they either won't deliver (fair enough, but then they shouldn't imply it in the advertising as a couple of firms have been told and reported) or you have to phone an expensive number, kept waiting for ages to be told that the item will cost you X£ over the normal delivery charge. Even if you're daft enough to pay it and some are truly exorbitant (sp?) they then use main carriers who hand it over to smaller ones and the main ones regard it as delivered. You are therefore in deep trouble when you don't get your goods. I'm not just referring to camping stores here; it can be furniture, white goods, you name it. One of the saddest instances was a certain firm who was paid a great deal of money to deliver special goodies for a wedding reception - they didn't turn up but were subsequently found a couple of weeks later dumped in a ditch. This one ended in Court.
I now check the delivery situation every time and email the firm in question to ask if there is a RM alternative (assuming the size of goods, of course) and if they insist on using a carrier for an item that could be sent RM, I say no thanks! I've had a go at a couple of firms recently and they've changed their tune and RM will deliver, saving me over £14 and £20 respectively and the hassle of chasing up. I think it must only be in cities where you get problems with RM.
An awful lot of companies don't like this attitude but you can report them if you want something sent RM (i.e. smaller items) and they refuse. What happens if they sell off part of RM, God knows; but there will be a lot of legal challenges if we in rural parts only get mail three times a week - and a lot of unnecessary deaths because bloods can't be got off the island.
Some will try and be canny and say they'll deliver to a friend or family member for the standard rate - I've had that go wrong twice, plus it's costing friends and family money to make profit for the businesses.
