Thans for all your suggestions.
In the end we didn't take anything with us but the first day we were there we went into a local town and saw a junk shop, outside there was an old galvanized steel mop bucket. So we bought it for £2, used the mallet to knock the top bit off (where you squeeze out the mop), and tent pegs to make a series of holes around the sides at the bottom. We then put a few stones in the base to stop the ash blocking the hoels and it made a fabulous fire pit! When we left we passed it on to the next people arriving.
