Speedcamp: I had exactly the same experience in Norflok at half term - never exprienced pitching on such hard ground before in the last 5 years!  It was bending normal steel pegs at about a third way in, nylon deltas wouldn't go fully in either. Ground not rocky, just been so dry. Luckly I had claw hammer, and this with a few taps from my other hammer got them out (pushed the plastic bit on the peg out of the way). The kids pup tent (a force 10) had lightweight aluminum pegs - well they were completely useless - looked like spaghetti after the kids had tried hammering them in! 
One of the items on my "To Do" list is to recce the area for supermarkets with pharmacy, Halfords, camping/outdoor equipment shops, and places I would like to visit via the internet, and include them on a text file, to be printed and taken with me for the trip.
This way, I shall have their post codes to hand to input into my sat nav in case I need them.
I learnt the hard way 2 years ago when I wanted to go somewhere, and could not find the address via the web while on the campsite due to poor mobile broadband coverage. I tried directory enquiry, however, phone reception was rubbish too!
