'Get a NOKIA smartphone and you get a very good quality voice-guided satnav for about 80 countries FOR FREE!!'

We used ours in France last year and it worked fine although the ASDA in car charging lead packed up so got a decent Nokia one in France.  One advantage using a smart phone is that you can play music through the car stereo which mutes as the instrructions come through loud and clear.

Ooh I've got a Nokia smartphone (I think!)
How do I get this app?

Which Nokia do you have?

My wife has the N8 and it worked out of the box.

All 'Android' phones have Google Navigation which I use and again is free.

It's a 5230 - don't know much about it, inherited it from son!

A quick look on Google finds this:-

When you run OVI Maps on the 5230, the GPS will be activated. You'll have to wait till the GPS receives signals from at least 4 satellites to get a "fix" or "lock" This can take some time depending on where you are. Using A-GPS is an advantage for a faster fix. Read the English manual on page 95 aboutGPS.

I have a Dell Streak which has a 5" screen and as it uses your data connection to get road names - also downloads traffic updates.

The problem with Android satnav, last time I checked, is that you need to be live with data constantly downloading which is not much use in remote areas and is very expensive overseas.  With NOKIA you can pre-download all the maps and instructions (in various languages if you want to show off!!) in advance via your computer and so no data costs UNLESS you choose to have live traffic updates.

We have family in Malaysia, Singapore and India and friends in the States and various other places; I have free satnav with no data costs for all these places.  I don't know how TomTom can survive.  Their high-end devices do have some advantages but for the vast majority of us the NOKIA OVI Maps is more than sufficient.

A friend of mine has a 5230 and I tried out her satnav.  So far as I can tell it's identical to the one on my higher-end N8.  In fact several lower end NOKIA phones that are not really smartphones at all have very good voice-guided satnavs with the only slight down-side being the small screen size.  My son's 6700 classic has an excellent satnav for the size of phone; it takes a little longer to get a fix as it doesn't have A-GPS but once it has a lock it's just as rapid as mine.  A friend has, I think, the C5; again very good satnav included.
