Hi gingercol.

That's a good point, but it's not quite as black and white as you make it seem, as it is often difficult, to determin if you have got a clear line of sight to the satellite, as we have found on campsites with lots of tree shade, signals can pass through light leaves, and canvas even, although this does atenuate the signal, thus requiring a larger dish than first envisiged.

Just have a look at my 80cm Dish in my gallery, you can hardly see it for the trees, but we get all the channels picture perfect.

As for Vin Blanc's Dish, it would be interesting to know the make and model, and weather the 40cm is the width of the Dish face or the height?.

I have just been out into the garden and measured the dish in question. It is a Maxview "Suitcase" dish and the actual width is approx 37cm. Height is a couple of cm more.

I purchased a Humax Foxsat HD recorder as soon as they hit the market and have never regretted it. Obviously I had to change the single LNB to a twin but that was no problem.

There is nothing special about the small "Suitcase" dish, the only reason it performed so well so far south was down to the Humax receiver and better LNB.

Eventually, the dish got tired of being assembled and disassembled and had to be held together with Araldite.

It is now retired and sitting happily in the bushes in the garden providing Sky FTA in the van while parked up at home. (See the couple of picts in my Photo gallery).

We often use the van as a summerhouse when it’s a bit windy and it’s nice to have the TV working in there.

Obviously the Humax PVR returns to its normal location in the house.

I have recently purchased a 57cm Prime focus "Arcon" dish, and am able to set that up in about 2 minutes without using a signal finder and without even switching on the TV. – now that’s likely to arouse someone’s curiosity I suspect?

Hi Vin Blanc.

I guess with the Arcon 57cm being of a Prime Focus design, that will make alignment a tad easiar as the dish will look directly at the satellite unlike a Ofset dish. you will have to let us know your none meter method.

I do have a Solarsat dish, that uses the sun, to find your satellite of choice, it is 100% acurate, but of coarse can only be set up when the sun is out.

As for your Acron Dish, is the LNB interchangeable, or is it fully embedded into the Dish?.

Also have you any info as to who the manufacturer is, as they are making a bold claim, that it work as well as a 80cm Dish (74cm in old money!).

I would be intrested to find out what the db Gain is of the Arcon at around 11Ghz.

Of course it's "Cassegrain" design does pull in more signal than a regular PFA or Ofset Dish, Philips used to do a Ofset "Cassegrain" dish back in the 1980's but it never caught on due to using a bespoke LNB design. having said that it could easaly outperform larger Dish's than itself.

Edit = found technical info, at 37.1 db Gain, now that's pretty good if below 12Ghz and will certainley give a regular 80cm Dish a run for it's money, although with a decent 80cm Dish costing say £50 tops c/w LNB and the Arcon costing £160 it ought to, I would be worried about it getting nicked whilst I am watching the telly lol.

Hi Fransais

Appreciate your interest in my Arcon dish and my method of aiming it however, having solved (hopefully) the lady’s original problem, I would suggest we terminate this thread and start a new thread under which to continue our deliberations.

Shall I start it off with the title of Satellite TV

regards Vin Blanc
