when going to our usual camp site distance of about 160 miles was only about 30 minuets behind a mate who was not towing

But did they have the kettle on ready for your arrival?

Well you have all given me a lot to think about. Thanks for your help and advice. I definately didnt know about taking more tests to tow a trailer. I would be ok though as i passed the year before that, but still i could have been in trouble.

Thanks again everyone!

Check out  Roof Box Co. I found them very helpful. We bough an Autoform in the end as it was good value (can't remember how much) and HUGE.

Good luck

Dave

I doubt there is much to choose between a roof box and a trailer when it comes to affecting fuel consumption. The roof box may increase drag but even a pretty small trailer is going to weigh around 300Kg (empty), about the weight four average size adults. Think about the difference it makes having just one person in your car to what it's like with 3  passengers.

Martin.

I've done both, many times over thousands of miles and can confirm a roofbox uses more fuel. And that's with a 750 kilo trailer and a 1400cc car.
