If you've got the room(and the payload!) to carry them, use these:

http://premierbarriers.co.uk/catalog/fencing-pins-pack-p-94.html

A mate "borrowed" some for me,from work...

I tidied up any rough edges on the top  and gave them a coat of hammerite..and I never have any problems with getting them in and out..and the hooks on the top are idea for hanging the lanterns on...

..I used our's to make a windbreak using snow-nettin(..photo in gallery,I think...)..

...At weekend we saw a new Outwell one which is curved with poles running the length of it top and bottom as well as the uprights. It looked really sturdy with a minimal of pegging by guys. Might be worth a look.

However the down side is the price....

Nice, but £109.99 ! Thankfully they don't do a polycotton

My advice is worth no more than the price paid for it

Have been considering "upgrading" to the modern style with stronger poles and guys. Can't seem to find anyone with a convincing argument!

At the moment I am in Newquay and the winds are blowing constantly at around 18mph with around 26mph gusts. I am using cheap wooden poled plastic beach versions. One of them is around 20 years old and looks tired but is still serviceable. The other is about 5 years old and looks as bad as the day it came from the beach shop! Neither cost me more than a fiver.

My method is to drive them in as far as possible using a rubber 2lb mallet, then the following day drive them all a bit further when they have had chance to settle. Because of the wind I have as always attached a few guys at various points. So far this method has never. Let me down and at the rate of consumption I can afford several disasters before getting anywhere near the cost of the fancy ones!

Moral of the story? I have no idea ......

Hi,

I have just ordered a Outwell Windbreak, yes the Expensive one, but we paid £75 from outlet camping.

It is very good, but may be a little fiddly to assemble.

We are off on our travels in 3 weeks, so will try and get some photos when all set up

Best Regards
Nathan

Hi I purchased the Isabella Crystal, best windbreak I have ever seen. Carbon fibre poles with  4 mesh panels the whole thing only weighs about 6 kilo.

Its expensive but it is quality.

I use the ground spikes with my Blue Diamond windbreak as I can't always bash them into the ground deep enough!

Hi helen

Is it the tubes from Towsure that you have, I have some questions if you could help please, before I go and order some to use with our Blue Diamond windbreak.

How long is the actual tube that the pole sits in and does the pole fit quite tightly in the tube so it isn't wobbling about all the time.

Have you used these without having to drill them in/out, I'm thinking just a block of wood on the top to hammer them in on pretty normal ground.

Thanks

Pete.

In days of old, when Knights were bold, and I had lots of money....

I bought two Isabella framed windbreaks for an outrageous sum.

I've also owned the wooden pole variety (plain fabric!)

The Isabella ones were OK - but nowhere near worth the price - thanks to the large number of poles that had to be threaded through & across the fabric, they also took almost as long to put up as an awning ;) (and weighed almost as much!)

The wood pole ones did the job - but you needed Sampson wielding a heavy mallet to get them to stay upright.

Returning to the camping fray after some time out, we bought a Coleman windbreak from Ebay. It was cheap (less than £30) and I wasn't really expecting it to be much good - but, such is Sod's law, it proved to be the best windbreak we've ever owned.

The flexible poles attach to eyelets at the top & bottom of the windbreak, and 8 guy lines attached to 4 pegs kept the thing bolt upright in a very stiff wind.

No top poles, but thanks to the design, no sagging.

All in all, I wish I'd bought the Coleman windbreaks first time around - and kept the £340 for the Isabella's in the bank..
