No. It's not the surge voltage that is the issue. These generate a nasty square wave which a surge protector won't rectify.
no, they don't, they can't... square waves are produced by electronics in cheaper inverters (possibly some of the cheaper inverter gennys out there)
The cheap gennys dont have this, they just output a sine wave, and yes, it is a proper sine wave.
The problem on cheap gennys is two fold.
In order to have a good 230V at 50Hz the engine speed needs to remain constant, the regulation on the cheap gennys is poor to say the least.
when the genny is put under load, it needs to increase fuelling to compensate, most cheap gennys you can hear the dip in revs as it compensates as it dips, voltage and frequency dip, this however isn't the issue.
The issue arises when the load drops off, the voltage can rise quite dramatically for a time, and the frequency jump rather high, its usually the frequency jump, rather than the overvoltage that kills electronics, most can survive a voltage jumps, increase frequncy they do not like.
however a surge protector isn't going to help, the spikes are too long.
Inverter generators use electronics to keep the frequency constant, and better regulators to keep voltage constant.

we do a lot of flyball tournaments and have one of these type jenny's that originally came from Woolworths,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, its now around 6 years old and is used relatively frequently, not as loud as you think and starts with a good yank every time, at £60 its probably worth buying
