i used to fill the kettle and switch on, then turn off the remote socket, take remote to bed and flick the remote socket back on in the morning, voila a boiled kettle without getting out of bed, then you 'inform' your kids to make the tea!! bonus!! we have been using them for heating appliances for years with no problems, but might alter from one set to another, we have used Tesco and Asda ones.
