I realise this is a tad late, but here is a system I put together for our van conversion for under £200:

http://anton.belodedenko.me/mobile-satellite-internet/

The system is connected to Astra 3 satellite, which covers most of Europe, on a Ku-band with max 10Mbps down. Works pretty well.

Hope this helps someone..

I use my smartphone as a modem for my laptop.  I have an unlimited amount of data use per month so it is ideal in GB.  However, I wouldn't use it abroad as it would be too expensive.

How do you do that ?
Not very technical , but to have the ability to do that whilst away would be great

Robbie. This is what we do,but with 3, its unlimited data package. The one catch is you can only use 12gig data per month if your tethering from your phone, its not made very clear in their wording and we had to read it in their terms. Is virgin like this or do you have unlimited data even when tethering? Blo*dy anoying really as I would have liked to get rid of my BT internet at home.

On my phone there is an icon for "use mobile as a wifi hotspot". The mobile then appears in the available wifi connections on the laptop and you click connect. The first time you do it you'll need to put in a security code which is displayed on your phone.
