I've just bought something from Argos and reserved it, when I went to collect it had gone up by £60! I explained and they looked on the system and because I reserved at the lower price that's what I paid :) maybe I was just lucky!

That has always been my experience with Argos when picking up reserved goods.
Like you I may also just have been lucky..

I take it they don't charge when you reserve then?

Seems rather unfair, (to say the least!) to reserve an item to collect the following day, only to find it has gone up in price!!

Do they not do a "buy now and collect later" type option?

I think many shops will honour a lower price, although legally they don't have to.  My mum is a menace for arguing the point at the till if it comes up more expensive...for instance if she's picked something up off a sale rail and it's not actually in the sale...'you have to give it to me at that price!'...er...no, actually they don't.

Sorry to correct you Veena but legally they do. They can say there was a mistake but it is covered in law
Argos do put there prices up against reserved items eg reserve Saturday at 29.99 and go in to pay Monday and collect and its 39.99 but whilst they can try and do it there is actually a law that cover's this and to the original OP I would write to Argos stating you are considering a claim Its called for those that want to look it up the law of Estoppel made famous by a former Master of tr Rolls LORD Denning...
In laymans terms it means if you are put in a postilion of understanding something will be the case eg the chairs will be 9.99 then Argos are Estopped from changing it. they led you to believe they would be 9.99. there are some famous cases of this law, where a statement had been made and relied upon (not just for buying something but it usually involved money) where the person changing there mind has come very unstuck.

I've only just skimmed through this thread...

..Surely we're just talking of 9 quid camping chairs here....that for what ever reason, the OP chose not to purchase when they first came across them...

...They then chose to drive from Durham to Sunderland(admittedly because of info' Argos had given them)..but they then again, chose not the purchase them and drive back empty handed because the were just 4 quid dearer!? ...

Now fire off an email to customer services by all means(..and I wouldn't mind betting Argos would probably issue some sort of credit note as a good will gesture, if you did) but talk of threatening to  make ".. a claim.." seems way OTT to my mind..

We can't have it both ways.."claiming" for the silly stuff when the mood takes us..and then complaining about  folk making "..silly compensation claims.." the next...

Totally incorrect. Any offer in a shop window, shop, website etc, is an Invitation to Treat. It's an offer for the potential purchaser to enter into a negotiation. The seller may, or may not, decide to accept the buyer's offer (of the advertised price, or some other price).

Only when both parties are in agreement, and the consideration is paid, does a contract exist. In the case of Argos, dealing with them is deemed to be an acceptance of their T&C which say:

4.3 The price you pay is the price displayed on this website at the time we receive your order apart from the following two exceptions:
a) For products reserved online for store pick up or any other reservation service the price you pay is the price in store on the day of collection.
b) While we try and ensure that all prices on our website are accurate, errors may occur. If we discover an error in the price of goods you have ordered we will inform you as soon as possible and give you the option of reconfirming your order at the correct price or cancelling it. If we are unable to contact you we will treat the order as cancelled. If you cancel and you have already paid for the goods, you will receive a full refund.

Of course, what they may do, day-to-day, local discretion basis etc, is one thing. But their official stance is set out in the T&C above. Their standard "Check and Reserve" option does not involve payment up front. Clearly, if it did, the deal would be done - errors and omissions excepted, of course.

Whilst a retailer cannot display a price and then charge another at point of sale they can decide to decline to sell the item totally. For example if a wine merchant accidentally displayed a price on Krug champagne of £2.99 they cannot then ask the customer for £299. They van however remove the goods from sale until the price point has been corrected. In the case of argos the contract of sale is not complete until you arrive in store and pay. The only price they need to honour is the one that applies at that moment.

Do you have links to these laws, as when googling, there is nothing that supports this due the the law of estoppel being based on representation of fact, however, the terms state that the price you pay is not the price displayed, but the price on the day of collection, maybe legal brains will be able to advise, but going into the store shouting rights that don't exist will make you look stupid. I know, I have worked in retail and dealt with these idiots.

I have always found Argos to be very fair when reserving items. I reserved a satnav that was half price, on a special offer, at about 10pm. When I went to collect it at 9am on the following day, it had reverted to the normal price, so I said "thank you, but I won't bother at that price". The young girl who was serving me asked why, so I pointed out that it was half price when I ordered it, so she just got the supervisor to override the price and I got it for what I had expected to pay.
I think we are our own worst enemy at times, because they have loads of cases where people reserve items, but don't actually turn up to collect them

Yes, agreed...
We seem to have gone from the situation where we were all too polite to complain or make a fuss..to one where the default setting is to assume that everyone is out to screw us over and to shout "Name & Shame" / "Rip off Britain" at the first hint of anything not going the way we wanted...

When I studied contract law it was clearly pointed out to us that when a shop lists a price, it is an invitation to treat...YOU then make the offer by taking it to the counter to buy it at that price...they can then either accept that offer or reject it.  So, legally, you can go into any shop, take any item to the till and offer them what you want to pay for it...they can then reject this.  It is only when an offer has been made and accepted that a contract is in place. So if you see something that is marked up incorrectly, under contract law this is not necessarily the price you will pay as the seller can refuse to accept that as an offer. So unless contract law has changed (and it is a while since I did it), that's my understanding of it.

I always reserve goods with Argos, firstly it lets you know if they have stock in your nearest store and if not the next nearest etc..and like others have said you will pay what they were when you reserved them..
You also have two days to pick them up.

as said above, it's not the price you reserve them at, it's the price on the day you pick them up. This is clearly stated when reserving items.

Tbh I can't see what the original fuss is about. If I really wanted the chairs and had gone all that way to get them then for the sake of four quid extra on each one I would have bought them anyway. It seems stupid driving the distance, using fuel at today's prices, and coming away empty-handed, that was a total waste of time.
