Sorry but find that a bit judgemental without any further information, could have been a malfunction or a total accident, we don't know! They could have been experienced campers for all you know. I agree with TraceyD on this....just because they're young doesn't mean they don't know what they're doing. My teens are experienced campers! And Higgy 1000.....we use suitcase stoves all the time and, touch wood, have never had a problem with them.
I've only used mine a couple of times with no problems, however the first one I bought leaked horrendously when I pushed the lever down to lock the cylinder in, I tried a couple of different cylinders and it was definitely a problem with the stove, after I took it back and swapped it the new one was fine. There must be thousands of these in use but I don't think I'll take any chances, a friend has given me a 907 cylinder and a two burner stove with grill so I think I'll use that instead.

Before the post was mysteriously edited the poster stated it was a Trangia stove which burn meths unless fitted with multifuel or gas burner. So possibly a liquid fuel stove not gas as reported. As usual press do not report accurate facts, hence the speculation. This report states it was a caravan explosion so who knows?
At risk of being called pedantic again, the news article in the link did not actually say the explosion took place "inside" a caravan, and that the explosion took place on a caravan site!
As far as I am aware, liquid fuel stoves run at much low pressure compare with gas canisters, hence safer to use than gas.
Liquid fuel spillage will burn if caught fire, however, it is unlikely to cause explosion, unless highly pressurised containers are being heated.
However, I could be wrong.
