Yes the noise of a compressor fridge will be a nuisance for a light sleeper. If you are like me it would keep you awake.
If the hum of a domestic fridge motor were continuous, it might just have a soporific effect, Unfortunately, the motor will be continually switched on and off by the fridge thermostat which switches the motor on as the fridge warms up and off again as the temperature drops to its required setting. So it's the noise of the constant switching on and off that disturbs your sleep. Sweet dreams! Vin Blanc

Mind you, it does far less of that at night (when you are most likely to be sleeping) ... as 1. The fridge door isn't opened/closed to access stuff, so temp holds for longer, and 2. It's cooler at night, so the warming up period will be considerably longer.
